Entertainment Brief: 8/22/22

From directing, music producing and more, this is your entertainment brief from last week’s biggest entertainment news.

Olivia Rodrigo is back in the studio

Just over a month after her “Sour Tour” concluded, Olivia Rodrigo is back in the studio working on her sophomore record.

On Aug. 16, 2022, producer Dan Nigro, who produced Rodrigo’s breakthrough album “Sour,” posted an Instagram story of himself and Rodrigo in the studio.

According to a report by Music News, Rodrigo’s new album is going to feature a different sound and style compared to her first.

“Olivia’s debut was one of the biggest in years,” a source told The Sun. “She really did something special when she was in the studio with Dan. She wants her follow-up to evolve her sound, so it isn’t exactly the same.”

Billboard reported Rodrigo herself confirming this sound evolution when she spoke to Elle this past March.

“I’m definitely not as sad as I was when I wrote ‘Sour,” Rodrigo said. “I’m excited to make my next record and explore more colors, textures and feelings.”

On Sept. 24, Rodrigo will induct Alanis Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. The two first teamed up in October 2021 during Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” series. They also performed “You Oughta Know” together at L.A.’s Greek Theater.

Johnny Depp to direct his first feature film in 25 years

Months after winning his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is set to direct his first feature film in 25 years.

According to Variety, the film is entitled “Modigliani,” a biographical drama about the Jewish Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. Al Pacino is set to produce the film, along with Barry Navidi.

In a statement, Depp said he was honored to bring Modigliani’s story to the big screen.

“It was a story of great hardship, but eventual triumph,” Depp said. “[It’s] a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”

The film is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre and tells the early 20th century painter’s story as he rises from a critical failure to an artistic legend.

Depp made his directorial debut in 1997 with “The Brave,” a film in which he starred alongside Marlon Brando. The film was heavily criticized both commercially and critically. Depp has not directed a film since, although he produced multiple times, including “Hugo,” and “The Lone Ranger.”

“Modigliani” is only Depp’s latest creative endeavor since winning his defamation lawsuit. Earlier this summer, on July 15, he released his first album: a collaboration with guitarist Jeff Beck called “18.”

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” Premieres on Disney+

On Aug. 8, “She Hulk: Attorney at Law” premiered on Disney+.

The show, starring Tatiana Maslany, follows the life of Jennifer Walters as an attorney who specializes in superhero cases.. When her blood accidently converges with  Bruce Banner (played again by Mark Ruffalo), she becomes a female version of Banner’s alter ego, She-Hulk.

The show presents a more eccentric origin story than we have seen before, especially following the dark vigilante story of “Moon Knight.” In a less formal approach, Walters repeatedly breaks the fourth wall to speak directly to the audience, becoming the MCU’s first fourth wall breaking character.

In addition, the first episode starts off rather quickly, introducing Walters’ transformation within the first five minutes. The episode ends fast as well at only 37 minutes in length, which is notably shorter than recent Marvel TV shows.

While more enjoyable than “Ms. Marvel” but not quite up to the standards of “Moon Knight,” “She Hulk: Attorney at Law” is better than originally thought.

When it is all said and done, “She Hulk: Attorney at Law” will consist of six thirty-minute episodes which air on Thursdays, another change in pace for the typically Wednesday-debuting company. The next episode will premiere Aug. 25.

You can watch “She Hulk ” on Disney+.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez Host Second Wedding Celebration

On Saturday, Aug. 20, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lawrence hosted their second wedding ceremony at Affleck’s 87-acre estate in Georgia.

While Lopez and Affleck officially tied the knot last month in a small late-night ceremony, this celebration focused more on family and friends.

The wedding festivities lasted from Friday through Saturday. According to a source reporting to People Magazine, the weekend was going to be full of activities.

“[Lopez has] an extraordinary weekend of celebrations planned,” the source said. “[including] a pre-wedding party, a ceremony,… lots of fun lined up.”

Many friends and family attended the wedding celebrations, including Affleck’s longtime friend and collaborator Matt Damon.

The acting duo recently appeared together in 2021’s “The Last Duel,” and are currently working on an untitled Nike movie telling the story of former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro.
