Entertainment Brief: Jan. 27

Panic! At The Disco Disbands

On Jan. 24, front man and founder of Panic! At The Disco Brendon Urie announced the group will be splitting after nearly 20 years.

Urie posted a goodbye letter from the band’s official Instagram, citing family and his expected baby as reasons for stepping away.

“Sometimes a journey must end for a new one to begin,” Urie said. “The prospect of being a father and getting to watch my wife become a mother is both humbling and exciting. I look forward to this next adventure.”

Panic! At The Disco first began in 2004 with members Urie (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Spencer Smith (drums), Brent Wilson (bass) and Ryan Ross (guitar, keyboards). Starting as a pop punk band with emo influences, they eventually released hits like “I Write Sins not Tragedies” and “Nine in the Afternoon.”

The band underwent different lineup changes throughout the next decade, but by 2016, Panic! At The Disco essentially became a Urie solo project. Even by himself, Urie proved prolific with his music, experimenting with various genres including Broadway. Famous songs like “Death of a Bachelor,” “High Hopes” and “Hey Look Ma, I Made It” came out of this period.

In 2022, Urie released Panic! At The Disco’s seventh studio album Viva Las Vengeance. Following the release, Urie embarked on a tour to promote the album currently in its European leg. After the tour’s conclusion on March 10, Panic! At The Disco will officially be a group of the past.

Michael Strahan Honored with Hollywood Walk of Fame Star

On Jan. 23, former NFL defensive end and current television personality Michael Strahan was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

According to the New York Giants’ website, the team’s former player joins a relatively short list of other athletes added to the Walk, including Muhammad Ali, Terry Bradshaw and Magic Johnson.

While Strahan is not the first athlete to be given a star, he is the first to receive accolades in the new Sports Entertainment category. His star is located at 6918 Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Line Store.

The New York Giants selected Strahan as the 40th pick in the second round of the 1993 draft. The defensive end stayed in New York his entire 15-season career. While playing for the Giants organization, Strahan helped the team clinch a Super Bowl win in 2007.

Stepping away from football after his Super Bowl win, Strahan became a media personality, appearing as a football analyst on Fox NFL Sunday as well as co-hosting Live! With Kelly and Michael alongside Kelly Ripa.

Strahan currently co-hosts the popular morning talk show Good Morning America.

Zoe Saldaña Sets Box Office Record
