Album Review: Rex Orange County

Rex Orange County has a unique musical style; his gift to the world is the depth of his lyrics and his talk-singing style. He at times talks the lyrics, which arguably gets the point across and makes a stronger impact than singing them would.

This coming of age album is about his turmoil since becoming famous with his debut album in 2016. Through singing about troubles with anxiety, girls and loss, he reveals everything about himself in this album, and it truly is beautiful.

“10/10,” arguably his most popular song on the album, talks about his life of fame and how he reminisces on his past life when he was normal member of society. “Always” also touches on this topic.

Rex, 21, has apparently gone through lots of heartbreak as his songs reflect the hurt he has gone through.

“Never Had the Balls” and “It’s Not the Same Anymore” depict two different heartbreaks, one where he never had the nerve to tell a girl how he felt about her. “It’s Not the Same Anymore” talks about a girl leaving him and their relationship being severed. In this song, he is beginning to realize it truly is not the same anymore and he must move on and stop living in the past.

Rex is always willing to open himself up in his songs and present the darkest and saddest side of himself to the public. Across all his songs and albums, he adds emotional intensity. Even though the songs do not possess the classic sound of a sad song, his lyrics are usually melancholy and deep.

“Pluto Projector” is a ballad about his girlfriend Thea. They have been together for four years now, and this song represents his love and feelings towards her. He sings about how she understands him more than he does himself. His love for her is portrayed in this song as timeless and everlasting. He loves her and elaborates on this love in many ways.

Rex sings about his girlfriend again in “It Gets Better.” In this song, he portrays their relationship from the start to where it is now, giving a vivid description of it. He looks back on the old times in their relationship with nostalgia.

“She changed the world I know,” Rex sings in the chorus. “And it’s better for it/ Four years later, and look where we really are/ Look how far we’ve come.”

These lyrics are so beautiful, and I can only imagine what the girl he is singing about is feeling. Who knew Rex Orange County was a romantic?

This album does differ from his previous album as it has more love songs, but the lyrical depth is still very much there and present.

Rex Orange County is an artist who has gifted us with amazing songs and his unique talent. In my opinion, this is arguably the best album of the year so far. I truly love everything about it, and I cannot wait to see where he goes from here.
