Things to do in Oklahoma in November

A new month provides Oklahoma Christian University students with an opportunity to get off campus and experience all the state of Oklahoma has to offer. The Talon has compiled the top things to do in Oklahoma during the month of November. 

Fall Peace Festival 

A celebration of Oklahoma groups advocating for social justice and civil rights will take place this Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Civic Center in downtown Oklahoma City. 

About 60 vendors will sell homemade candles, soaps and other goods from across the world. Advocates for poverty reduction, urban farming and women’s and children’s rights will be among the groups in attendance. 

The event supports The Peace House Oklahoma City, a center for education and nonviolent action on issues relating to human rights and environmental sustainability. 

Holiday festivities begin 

Rejoice, Christmas loversholiday light displays, festivals and celebrations across the Oklahoma City metropolitan area are set to open starting this week.  

Downtown in December, a nearly two-month-long celebration of the holiday season in the heart of Oklahoma City, kicks off this Thursday, Nov. 8, with ice skating and a winter market. 

A wider range of activities will become available after the Oklahoma City Tree Lighting Festival, which is set for Friday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. Downtown visitors can enjoy free streetcar rides on weekends throughout December. 

Complete with 4.5 million shining lights, Yukon’s Christmas in the Park display will open to the public on Monday, Nov. 18. Guests can choose to walk or drive through the expansive display, which features shining depictions of elves, Santa Clause and Christmas trees. The display is open nightly from 6 to 11 p.m. through New Year’s Eve. 

In Midwest City, the Holiday Light Spectacular will run from Friday, Nov. 22, through Christmas Day. Guests drive through a 1.5-mile path illuminated by more than a million lights. 

Edmond’s Luminance light display at Mitch Park will open Saturday, Nov. 23, with food trucks, pop-up shops and live music. The official lighting of the park is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 23. 

Luther Pecan Festival: Nov. 16 

Art, music and pecan-infused foods will be in abundance at the third annual Luther Pecan Festival on Saturday, Nov. 16. 

Amateur chefs from across the state will put their pecan cooking skills to the test at the Pecan Cookoff. Four categoriespecan pie, pecan sweet, pecan appetizer and pecan savorymake up the competition. 

In addition to the cookout, a benefit auction and live music performances are scheduled. Luther is located about 19 miles northeast of Edmond. 

Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal Show 

Snakes, lizards and everything in between will take center stage at the Repticon Reptile and Exotic Animal Show this weekend. 

Hosted at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds, the event features vendors selling pets, supplies, cages and other merchandise. There will also be seminars on how to properly care for reptile pets. 

Tickets are $12 for adults over the age of 12. 

Veterans Day ceremonies

A ceremony honoring past and current veterans will take place at the 45th Infantry Division Museum in Northeast Oklahoma City on Monday, Nov. 11, at 10:00 a.m. 

The ceremony will begin with a salute from a World War II anti-tank gun and continue with performances from the 145th Army Band and a message from a guest speaker. The event is expected to last approximately one hour. 

Similar parades will also take place at 10 a.m. on Veteran’s Day in Midwest City and Moore.
