This year, Oklahoma Christian University will celebrate their 75th Homecoming. The Homecoming Executives chose to honor the on-campus gym, the Dub, as a place for improvement with the 2024 homecoming philanthropy project.
Philanthropy and Devo Executive Director Olivia Persaile said the decision to update the Dub was motivated by improving the space for students and community members alike.
“Each year, homecoming tries to support an area on campus. We chose the Dub because it would be beneficial to students as well as the community,” Persaile said. “The Dub is free for all students to use with their student ID, and hopefully, this will encourage students to take advantage of that opportunity. We hope to purchase new equipment, such as large fans, yoga mats and a stair stepper machine.”
While every philanthropy project is unique, Persaile said this year’s philanthropy fundraising will have different requirements.
“This year’s philanthropy is a bit different because the clubs are all raising money together and points are awarded based on participation in the fundraisers rather than how much money each club raises,” Persaile said.
Persaile said the new fundraising requirements will make fundraising more achievable for smaller clubs.
“Based on the drastic variations between club sizes and number of alumni, awarding points based on the amount of money raised was unfair to the smaller/newer clubs so making philanthropy an all club effort just made sense,” Persaile said. “The clubs are now required to donate time through assigning members to help run our fundraisers to get full participation points.”
Fellow Philanthropy and Devo Executive Director Zoe Burmaster said she is most looking forward to this year’s fundraiser events.
“It has been great to see the clubs working together to raise money, and I look forward to our upcoming fundraisers like Zumba Night,” Burmaster said. “I am excited for homecoming this year because it is the 75th anniversary, so everyone is going all out, and it is so special.”
Burmaster said she hopes the philanthropy project will encourage students to make use of this free resource.
“The Dub is a place where all students are welcome, and we want to encourage them to use The Dub. It is important for our physical and mental health to exercise, and we wanted to be able to help support students in this goal,” Burmaster said.
In addition to Philanthropy, Burmaster said her favorite aspect of Homecoming is the events which unite the student body.
“My favorite part of homecoming is the homecoming basketball games,” Burmaster said. “It is fun to see us all come together as one student body to cheer for the basketball teams.”
For those interested in donating to the Dub, Burmaster said they should reach out to herself or the
Student Leadership Coordinator.
“If anyone would like to donate to this cause, they can contact me or Savannah Roeder,” Burmaster said.
