Entertainment Update: new shows coming to OKC

Plays, magic and mazes, oh my. From live performances to highly anticipated movies, Oklahoma City is filled with opportunities see shows this upcoming week.

The journey continues Sept. 18 as “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials,” hits the big screens. Based on a book of the same name, the sequel is about a group of young adults who try to find their way back home, while overcoming an obstacle known as the scorch.

The movie stars several actors from the first film, including Dylan O’Brien, Kayla Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Also coming to theaters on Sept. 18 is “Black Mass,” a movie based on the true story of Whitey Bulger.

Bulger was the brother of a state senator and is considered the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston.

The film stars Johnny Depp and Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch.

A stage version of the classic novel “Of Mice and Men” will be in Oklahoma City until Sept. 20, presented by OKC Theatre Company at the Civic Center.

Set in California during the Great Depression, it is a tale of two men, George and Lennie, who settle down in a new town and hope to acquire a piece of land one day. A story of friendship and the strive for the American dream, it’s a timeless classic.

Take a night off after class and experience the magic of Broadway as “The Illusionists” come to Oklahoma City. This show is filled with magicians who go by the Anti-Conjuror, the Manipulator, the Inventor, the Escapologist, the Trickster, the Weapon Master and the Daredevil. The Illusionists-Live from Broadway will be in Oklahoma City Sept. 15-17 at the Civic Center.

Good grief, being a teenager can be hard. The classic Peanut comic strips get parodied in “God Sees Dog: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.” After more than 50 years of childhood, the gang has finally grown up as audiences see Charlie Brown and the gang in their teenage years.

“God Sees Dog: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” will be running at the Carpenter Square Theatre until Sept. 26. Performances start at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Molly Aster, A 13-year-old girl and starcatcher apprentice, stumbles across a band of pirates, orphans and a crocodile. As she finds her way back to her father, she learns what it means to grow up. Along the way a mustached pirate and his right hand man, Smee, pursue her and the orphans. It’s a story of how Peter Pan, the boy who never wanted to grow up, and the lost boys came to be.

Peter and the Starcatchers” will be staged at Oklahoma City University in the Burg Theater, Sept. 18-27. Performances are Fridays at 8 p.m, Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.
