Upperclassmen Form New Intramural Team

Sophomores, juniors and seniors not in club can now play in intramural sports with a new upperclassmen only team.

“SGA has been trying to get more students who are not in clubs to be involved in intramurals,” Rick Judd, director of intramural activities, said. “We have always had independent teams and I have always been able to find teams for individuals who wanted to play but were not in clubs.”

Although the upperclassmen intramural team is geared towards students who are not in a club, the same rules and regulations that govern any club sports team will be applied.

“Through our discussions we came up with the idea to try upperclassmen – kind of the way freshmen have its own team,” Judd said. “We wanted an intramural team for the sophomores, juniors and seniors to where there was some kind of accountability and just not a free-for-all or just anybody could play, but you have to some kind of restrictions.”

Senior Daniel Redding said the chance to play in a club-unaffiliated intramural team gives a wider range of options and diversity for the student body.

“I think the fact that they are offering intramural sports is good because I don’t want to be a part of a club and I would be more inclined to join a sports team against other clubs,” Redding said. “I feel like other people don’t have time to join other clubs or go through the process of rushing, but they would rather play in a sports team that was not in a club.”

According to Judd, the newly-formed team can plan on playing a variety of sports.

“The upperclassmen intramural team can expect to play everything from softball, flag football, volleyball, tennis tournaments, cross-country, pingpong and pool, “ Judd said.  “Upperclassmen intramural team will be able to accumulate points like any club.  Next semester it is going to be basketball, soccer, swim meets, ping pong and disk golf tournament.”

One of the reasons why sophomore Joshua Jones joined the upperclassmen intramural team is because he liked the fact that any upperclassmen, regardless of his or her skill level, could still play for the upperclassmen team.

“I joined the intramural team because it is its first year and they are testing it out,” Jones said. “I want to try out softball then rush a club and see where to go from there. I think that upperclassmen like it just because it gives you an opportunity to play on the A Team even though you are not good enough for your actual club’s A Team.”

Jones said he is confident that playing for the upperclassmen sports team will boost his college experience.

“I could see how playing for the upperclassmen intramural sports team could enhance my college experience because when you rush a club you get really close to those in your club, but when it’s just guys in the upperclassmen team you can get the experience of hanging out with guys in other clubs that you may not otherwise get to hang out with,” Jones said.

According to Jones, when students join intramural teams they will get to interact with a variety of people they might not meet otherwise.

“I would definitely encourage other upperclassmen who are not considering joining the intramural team, because you get to meet people in other clubs that you may not have classes with and I think it is really cool and a good experience for anyone who wants to try something new and different,” Jones said.
