Taliban tells women to stay home

After President Biden announced the evacuation of troops from Afghanistan, the situation escalated. 

The Taliban has a history of marginalizing women when the group took over in the past. Since they are back into control, the group said women would be treated differently. However, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Majuahid advised women to stay home because fighters were not trained to respect them. 

“We are worried our forces who are new and have not been yet trained very well may mistreat women,” Mujahid said. “We don’t want our forces, God forbid, to harm or harass women.” 

Casualties reported after explosion in an airport in Kabul

The Pentagon confirmed at least two explosions with several casualties outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on Thursday, Aug. 26. Dozens of people were injured or dead, including 13 U.S. service members. 

The Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said: “We strongly condemn this gruesome incident and will take every step to bring the culprits to justice.”

President Biden spoke out after the incident, condemning the attack.

“To those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this: We will not forgive,” Biden said. “We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay.”

Kathy Hochul Becomes New York’s First Female Governor 

On Tuesday, Aug. 24, Democrat Kathy Hochul became the first female governor of New York after Andrew Cuomo’s resignation over sexual harassment allegations. 

The swearing-in ceremony was in Albany, New York. Huchul was sworn by the state’s chief judge, Janet DiFiore. Huchul will serve the rest of the term through the next election, in November 2022.

“I’ll tell New Yorkers I’m up to the task. And I’m really proud to be able to serve as their governor and I won’t let them down,” Hochul said. 

FDA grants full approval to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

On Tuesday, Aug. 23, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted full approval to the Pfizer vaccine for people age 16 and older. The Pfizer vaccine is the first to be approved by the FDA. 

FDA announced the vaccine “will now be marketed as Comirnaty.” 

Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said this approval may increase the number of vaccinated persons.

“While millions of people have already safely received COVID-19 vaccines, we recognize that for some, the FDA approval of a vaccine may now instill additional confidence to get vaccinated,”Woodcock said. “Today’s milestone puts us one step closer to altering the course of this pandemic in the U.S.”

2 Ninnekah school board members resign, superintendent and principal suspended amid scandal

After sexual abuse claims, the Ninnekah Public Schools Board of Education accepted resignations on Wednesday from Board President Rusty Garret and clerk Scott Miller. 

As three more victims have come forward, not only the board members resigned but school leaders were suspended. 

“I find that the passion I once had for serving the district is not what it should be and have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to step down as board president and resign from my seat on the board of education,” Garrett wrote in his resignation letter, which Vice President Dustin Tate read aloud. 

 Mass arrest of street racers Sunday night includes nearly 70 people

On Aug. 22, police arrested nearly 70 people on trespassing complaints as drivers were reportedly hot-rodding in a Hobby Lobby parking lot southwest Oklahoma City. 

The racers were seen skidding their vehicles and spinning tires at 2213 W Interstate 240 Service Road.

Sgt. Dillon Quirk of the Oklahoma City Police Department told the Oklahoman [they] had an officer that was assaulted during the situation. He had a bottle thrown at his head, had minor injuries, but he was treated and released. He’s going to be just fine.”
