Q&A: New Spiritual Life/Ethos Office Assistant Ruth LeFan

After graduating from Oklahoma Christian University in May 2018 with a degree in family science, Ruth LeFan will remain on the campus as the new Spiritual Life/Ethos Office Assistant.

A native of Tulsa, OK, LeFan currently attends graduate school part-time while she pursues a master’s degree in social work. She got married this summer, and said she loves to run and cook. According to LeFan, she welcomes all students into the Ethos office to get chocolate and say hello.

Q: Why did you decide to take this job and stay at Oklahoma Christian?

My senior year, I started covering [this position] part-time when I was a student, and they offered me the full-time position when I graduated. It’s a really good job to have during grad school, and I love the people I work with.

Q: What are your responsibilities?

I do a lot for Ethos. Whenever people fill out reduction requests for chapel, I look at those and I have a list of requirements to see if they qualify to give them their reductions. I also look at Ethos event requests and help students set those up. I get to do some ministry, so I’ll be leading some Bible studies and doing one-on-one coffee dates with people.

Q: What do you hope to bring to the Ethos department?

I hope to make [the office] run smoothly. I want to make this office a place people want to come visit and hang out in. I want people to enjoy the Ethos program and feel like they’re growing spiritually because of it. There was a lot in the Ethos program that helped me grow spiritually when I was in school and I hope people experience those good things, too.

Q: What have you enjoyed about the job so far?

One thing I really like about this position is the people that I get to work with. The staff and faculty at OC are some of the best mentors, so getting to work with them is awesome. Being part of helping other people grow spiritually helps you grow spiritually, as well. I love that I get to work with people that I respect and admire so much, and I hope I can learn a lot from them.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with students on a personal level?

I love the one-on-one stuff with students. I worked as a part-time youth minister for a few years and it’s kind of like that, but moving up with the college students. I think I’m going to really enjoy that part, but I also love doing the behind-the-scenes stuff—it’s a good balance of getting to do both.

Q: What advice do you have for students looking to grow spiritually?

Get involved and actually go to chapel. Sometimes, it can feel tedious, but chapel is so great because it gives you time to refocus your day. It’s really unique to be in a place where you have time set aside each day to worship and be with other believers and focus on that. Take advantage of it while you’re here.

Q: How would you advise a college student looking to create an Ethos event?

If you have an idea for an Ethos event, follow through with it. Come talk to us and we’ll set it up. If you have something that could make the campus a better place and help you grow spiritually or help others, we’re happy to help you with that. We would love for our events to be more student-led.
