A senior’s list of secrets for Spring Sing

If you are looking for some blank stares, try explaining Spring Sing to anyone who does not attend OC or another Christian university.

“Um yeah … Our social service clubs, sort of like your sororities and fraternities, pick a theme, then we write lyrics about said theme that are then sung to karaoke tracks that are certainly infringing on copyright. We sing these songs while choreographing in costumes, typically consisting of a lot of felt and hot glue. And glitter of course.”

For those of us who have been involved in Spring Sing, this conversation with our state school friends is one that we all can understand. So what keeps us coming back? What makes us voluntarily sign up for potentially 40 hours of practice on top of our already busy schedules? What gets into our heads that says yes to allowing a friend to flip us on a wooden ramp with absolutely no traction?

There is just something about Spring Sing. It could be the costumes. It could be the lyrics. It could even be that some clubs make it a requirement. But in the end, we all know that Spring Sing is worth it.

As a senior whose last show is this weekend, here are the five most important things you will ever need to know about Spring Sing:

1) Your faces should be big, your lines should be straight, and your diction should be impeccable. No one wants to see a sloppy show.

2) Everyone looks TERRIBLE in a wig cap. It is not just you.

3) Do not ever try to use Spring Sing as an excuse to your professors. It literally never works, I promise.

4) You can always count on some club shows to be perfect, other shows to be full of high energy, and some others to just be terrible. Remember though, that everyone has worked hard to get to where they are. Do not discount the work of others, or even the work that you have put in yourself, when awards come around on Saturday night.

5) When in doubt, put more glitter on it. This counts for costumes, makeup, banners, whatever. Nothing like hundreds of stage lights reflecting off of you in your disco ball state to really wow the audience.

Have fun this weekend. Take lots of pictures, drink tons of water, and have a few hundred Pixy Stix. It will all be worth it in the end.
