Abusing the internet

I read 10 pointless articles this week. It started as looking for something to write about but it turned into a rabbit hole of useless media coverage and entertainment news. Give it another few clicks and wind up on YouTube mindlessly watching videos about the sounds animals make.

We have the entire world at our fingertips, yet do we do with it? We rant about our troubles and look at pictures of baby animals. Yes, those pictures are super cute. Show me a picture of a giraffe and there is no way I am not looking and awww’ing. But I will be the first to admit that this is kind of stupid.

Does that mean we can’t look at cute pictures anymore? No. I don’t think you can avoid getting sucked into the dark pits of the Internet every once in awhile. But we can stop doing this all the time. Take some responsibility and actually do something productive. Better yet, turn off the computer.

Do you know that at one time, we had to communicate exclusively face-to-face or in written form? I know, crazy. We also had to go to a library to look up information in books or go out and find the information for ourselves. Not too long ago, if you needed to get breast milk for your baby, you found a wet nurse or someone to provide you with it. Now you can go online and buy it. Not only that, the selling of breast milk now needs to be regulated because bacteria has been found in many samples from the online site Only the Breast.

Before you make a face or criticize the exchange of breast milk online, I only use this as an example of some of the extreme differences between now and just a couple decades ago. Yes, obtaining breast milk is a real problem for couples who adopt or mothers who have trouble breast-feeding. It just seems weird that we as a society now turn exclusively to the Internet to solve all our problems.

We need to take responsibility for our own lives and get things accomplished. I admit that I act irresponsibly sometimes and spend my working hours trolling the Internet and looking at pictures of random things. Sometimes it feels good to do that. But we greatly hinder ourselves when we can’t get on the computer to work without spending at least half an hour looking at useless junk online.

To take the thoughts of a friend of mine, imagine someone from 100 years ago learning about the technology and innovation of the Internet. They would ask incredulously, “Wow! What do you use it for?” And we would hang our heads and say, “Cat videos and Facebook.” I don’t know about you, but that makes me sad.
