From where I stand

By Slaten Barnett

For as long as cell phones and chapel have been mixed together, the argument of how to act during chapel has been a topic of discussion.

I lead singing in daily chapel occasionally. Some mornings are great. There have been times where I can stand on stage, lead songs and feel the positive energy from the audience and everyone is participating in the service.

Other days can be awful. Sitting on stage, it’s hard to watch members of the student body – including my friends – completely tune out the speaker because of what is happening on Twitter and Instagram.

From where I stand, it can sometimes feel like the student body treats chapel like a joke. From where I stand, it seems as if worshiping God can become more of a daily routine instead of a 20-minute daily experience.

Change up your weekly routine. Find alternative chapels to attend. If sometimes you feel like you’re only attending chapel just so you can get your kudos, then find the motivation to be there and encourage those around you to put down their phones and take part in the special experience that only a handful of universities in the country get to take part in.

Instead of viewing Ethos as a personal checklist on how much you’re required to worship God, use Ethos as your personal motivator to seek God every day of your life.
