Keeping athletics and club harmonious

When I was making my decision whether or not to come to Oklahoma Christian University, I decided it was the place to be because it would be easy to play soccer and be involved with the school at the same time. I thought this would be difficult at a D1 school. When I arrived I found it challenging, but worth it nonetheless.

Being involved in school, soccer, church and a social club has been time-consuming, but every minute has been rewarding. There is a sense of family when it comes to your sports team because you spend so much time together, but other times you need to be with people that share your other interests. That’s what club is for me; they are my other family.

Club allows me to surround myself with girls that enjoy the community this school provides. More importantly, being in a club lets me hang out with girls that hold my faith and me accountable every single day. When you’re an athlete, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that you are going to a Christian school and are in a place where your faith can grow. For me, club helps to not lose sight of that.

Soccer and club often conflict, which can be hard, but finding the time for club outside of soccer is worth it. I might have two soccer practices a day and then Spring Sing practice at night. That sounds miserable to most, but that is a lot of people I care about packed into one day.

Growing up, soccer was the one thing people used to identify me – it was my life. But I knew when I came to college I wanted to find out who I was outside of the soccer world. I wanted to be known as someone other than the soccer player.

That being said, nothing is better than hearing my Gamma Rho sisters cheering for me on the sidelines. Having both sides of my life at Oklahoma Christian come together is a source of great joy for me. One of the best things in life is building relationships, and at Oklahoma Christian I have been fortunate enough to do that in the sport I love and in a club full of Christian women.
