Men’s winter style guide

While it is only the middle of November, the weather is fluctuating between pleasantly warm and miserably cool – a preview to the upcoming winter months.

Many are complaining about winter and the lack of creativity and excitement with different winter articles of clothing. I think the theme of winter 2013 is “Utility.”

Many college guys are taking an active role in their appearance, making a point to be fashion-forward. Men of all backgrounds are beginning to transition from a baggier, basic style of dress to a cleaner, more tailored and trend-pushing style.

Since we are beginning to entertain a few months of winter, there are ways we can make it through in an innovative fashion, yet maintain the functionality of our wardrobe. A couple imperative staples that every college gentleman needs are boots and a large overcoat.

If you look at the trends for both men and women, one thing that you will see is the influx of boots. Leather combat boots and wingtip boots are a must; they prove to be more useful than suede. During the winter months when everything is wet and covered in snow, suede is easily ruined by the elements, whereas leather is durable.  Burgundy, or its deeper brother “oxblood,” is a versatile and style-forward footwear color that doesn’t stray too far from tradition.

Oklahoma is known for its high wind speeds, meaning one can wake up to a 40-degree day, but when the wind becomes a factor the temperature can drop to a 20-degree chill. The best way to beat the chill is by layering. Guys constantly complain that there is no reason to attempt to look nice on cold days, because their shirts are hardly ever seen. This is false. A three-quarter zip sweater topped with a pea coat is an essential combination that will prove to be beneficial against the elements but stylish at the same time. Black and navy are safe choices for jackets and coats because they are very versatile and can switch from formal to casual with ease. If you want to be adventurous and take a step on the more trendy side, camel and beige are viable options, adding a hint of color and character to a dreary and blustery day.

Utility is a must. We all are not able to spend upwards of $500 to dress practically for the weather and still keep style in mind. It is better to have a few quality pieces that are versatile than to have flashy pieces that you can only wear on occasion.
