My lame duck session

This is the last article I will ever write for The Talon.

I was tempted to use this last article to tell you what life is all about, but then I remembered that I am 22 years old and do not have the slightest clue myself.

Looking back on my time as the opinions editor, my hope is that at least one of my articles was thought-provoking to those who read through it.

I was very humbled in my very first week as opinions editor with the remarkable reception that I got from my first article, “Shaking a Soldier’s Hand.” I trust that an even greater appreciation was directed to the brave men and women that protect this country.

I followed with a topic that was on my heart at the moment in, “The Blessing of the Bible.” I pray that this article served as an eye-opener and led a few to open the Holy Book instead of a current, trending book.

I put the most thought and prayer into my third article, “The Word of God on Homosexuality.” My intention was to pour just as much love and support into that article as scrutiny; taking a firm stance on the Bible’s disapproval of homosexuality while also providing a sense of understanding for a struggle with sin the likes of which I cannot comprehend.

In “Lost in the Human Race,” I attempted to slow things down. Life has a love for acceleration, but I hope this piece caused even a few to pause and take a deep breath instead of flying through life at top speed.

I got brave with “Graduating Unprepared” and sentimental with “Farewell to The Captain.” I challenged the men with “Calling Men of Courage” and challenged all with “Our Heritage and Legacy.”

I hope that each second was put into perspective with “Our Time is But a Whisper in the Wind” and that the future was respected with “A Reason for the Good Ol’ Days.”

Finally, “Words” was, to me, my capstone piece – documenting my appreciation for what I do and the ability of words to serve as bricks with which to build.

If I made even a fraction of an impact on just one reader, then I consider my time in opinions as a success. My goal for this section was not to insult, but to challenge; to encourage thought and open eyes.

In closing, I will pay tribute to the great paradox that I found in writing. I wrote to open the eyes of others, but in the process opened my own.

My time as the opinions editor made an impact on me and, per my aforementioned hope that I might have impacted just one, I guess that deems this endeavor a success in itself.

A sincere thank you to everyone who tuned in every Friday at 11:00. A writer has no purpose without a reader, and I am indebted to each of you.

It’s been fun. God bless.
