The word of God on homosexuality

We live in a culture where homosexuality is progressing; where more and more people are beginning to either stand up for, or become numb to, homosexual rights.

While so many measures are taken today to ensure homosexual right advancements – rallies, protests and the like – I stand as one opposed.

If you watched the Grammys last Sunday night you caught the performance of Macklemore’s hit song “Same Love” and the statement made with mid-performance marriages of both homosexual and traditional marriages. Macklemore’s aim for this public display was to make a symbolic call for equality among all sexual orientations.

In many ways, “Same Love” has become something of an anthem for homosexual rights, but there are many holes in the song’s defense of homosexuality – holes that are evidenced in scripture.

In the opening verse, Macklemore says that, “The right wing conservatives think it’s a decision,” claiming that, in fact, homosexual individuals are born that way – with a homosexual orientation from birth.  The apostle Paul, however, thinks differently.

In Romans 1:26-27, Paul writes, “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.”

Unmistakably, Paul describes sexual relations between men and women as natural, and clarifies that claim further in labeling homosexual relations distinctly unnatural. All men and women are born with a natural heterosexual orientation, and that is not from me, that is from God.

Deeper into the song Macklemore says, “America the brave still fears what we don’t know.” I have a problem with this not necessarily as a Christian, but as an American.

Firstly, America does not fear homosexuals; this is not an issue of fear, but of faith and morality. To mock the bravery of the greatest nation the world has ever known is revolting.

Secondly, to suggest that Americans are not educated about homosexuality is absurd. The very issue is rooted in Americans’ knowledge – the knowledge of right and wrong.

Lastly, and most outstandingly, Macklemore says, “And ‘God loves all his children’ is somehow forgotten, but we paraphrase a book written 3,500 years ago.”

Where do I begin?

I do not hate homosexuals and God does not hate homosexuals.

Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Everybody sins, homosexuality is merely one of those sins, but God sent his son to die for all of us, even though we are sinners.

Still, I could never stress enough the fact that neither God, nor I, love homosexuals less than anyone else.

Macklemore claims that our defense against homosexuality is rooted in biblical paraphrase, I suppose the best way to disprove that outright is to provide scripture … word for word, no paraphrasing.

Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.”

Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 – “Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practices homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people – none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Quite frankly, if we are going to defend homosexuality, per the aforementioned verse, who is also going to stand up for thieves?

If we are going to legalize homosexual marriage, why not legalize prostitution?

Why doesn’t Macklemore write a song defending domestic violence, or glorifying divorce?

Homosexuality is a sin, straight from the word of God. That does not mean it does not deserve attention – my heart hurts for those who struggle daily with those temptations. I pray constantly for those who are carrying burdens, homosexuality included.

To suggest that homosexuality is anything other than a sin however, is wrong. In the same breath, to legalize homosexual marriage and normalize that orientation is wrong  as well.

In a time when so many are fighting for the rights of homosexuality, I think it is about time someone offered a reminder as to why we are fighting against it.
