Eagle of the Week Jan. 19 – 26

Morgan Ray is Eagle of the Week this week following her performance at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, AR. Ray set a new school record in the indoor triple jump with a score of 35 feet and 8  1/2 inches. This broke the record set in February by Temar Smith by half an inch. Ray also competed in long jump and finished 25th out of 34 women.

Ray answered a few questions for the Talon after being named Eagle of the Week.

Why did you want to jump at Oklahoma Christian?

Both of my parents had attended the school, so they recommended it to me. Oklahoma Christian was local for me, so I thought it was my best option.

Why do you enjoy the triple jump and long jump?

I enjoy both events because they are very technical portions of track. Both the events give me time to fix mistakes during my performance. It’s also very competitive.

How did you start jumping in the field portion of events?

I started field events in high school. Mainly long jump because Oklahoma doesn’t allow triple jump. Over time, I just increased my skill and performance.

What is your goal for this season?

My goals for the indoor season are to reach around 11.2 meters in triple jump and 5.5 meters in long jump.

How did you prepare for this season?

By breaking down the phases of both events and working my weaker portions. Practice, of course, helps a lot too.

How did it feel to set your second record of your career?

I didn’t necessarily have the record in mind. I was just trying to get a good mark in. It was a blessing and pushes me to do better.

What are you studying at Oklahoma Christian?

Mechanical engineering.

How did it feel to be named Eagle of the Week?

It was a surprise, but I mostly think it was pretty cool. It was humbling to be recognized.
