The Eagles ran in their first meet of the cross county season and finished second as a team at the University of Central Oklahoma Land Run on Saturday.
Cross County Head Coach Wade Miller said this weekend required teamwork between all of his runners.
“We ran controlled as a group early in the race and that allowed several people to stay connected and work as a team,” Miller said.
Top finishers for the Eagles included senior Brennym Kaelin and senior Bryant Kierns. Kaelin finished fifth in the 102-man field with a time of 20:37.43. Kierns finished the next highest for the Eagles, posting a time of 20:59.41, placing him 10th in the field.
According to Miller, this was a good race for the team, but there are a few things they can learn from this meet.
“With every season opener almost everyone isn’t quite race sharp just yet and we will spend the coming weeks slowly progressing to the point of being able to focus and run well over the entire race distance,” Miller said.
Junior Kyle Broaddrick, who ran one of his best career races for the Eagles, posted a 12th-place finish with a time of 21:06.02.
Miller said he believes the key for this team to succeed will be to simply stay healthy.
“Keeping these guys healthy will be key for us,” Miller said. “We’re a decent team but we’ve got a big task ahead of us this year,” Miller said.
The Eagles run next at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Missouri on Sept. 19.
