Eagles and Lady Eagles both fall to Newman

After leading by two possessions with less than three minutes remaining, the Oklahoma Christian University women’s basketball team only scored once in the final minutes of play as they fell to Newman University 70–67 Jan. 27 in Wichita, KS.

Junior Addy Clift, who had a team high 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, scored two back-to-back baskets at 2:39 to give the Lady Eagles a 65–60 lead, which marked the Lady Eagles last lead of the game.

Newman took a 66–65 lead with 36.7 seconds left before forcing an Oklahoma Christian turnover that led to two foul shots, which put the Jets up 67–65 with 18.5 seconds remaining.

Freshman Maddison Collyer scored 15 points for the Lady Eagles, including a game-tying layup with 10 seconds left in the game, which evened up the score at 67–67.

Freshman Delyssa Miller finished with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

After Newman reclaimed the lead on a single free throw, bringing the score to 68–67, Oklahoma Christian called a timeout right after the made free throw before inbounding the ball. Collyer ran the baseline and stepped out of bounds on the play.

Oklahoma Christian Head Coach Stephanie Findley was called for a technical with 2.2 seconds left on the clock after arguing with the official about the out of bounds call.

The Jets made one of the two technical free throws. Then, the Jets went 1-of-2 from the line after the Lady Eagles fouled trying to extend the game, which ultimately gave Newman the win.

Overall, Oklahoma Christian turned the ball over 18 times on the game and allowed 20 points off the turnovers.

The men’s team shot a season low 26.7 percent from the field and turned the ball over 18 times as they were downed by Newman 79–51 Jan. 27.

The Eagles trailed 40–23 going into halftime and were down by as many as 36 at one point.. There were no lead changes as Newman led the entire game.

The Jets outrebounded Oklahoma Christian 51–29 and scored 22 points off of the Eagles’ turnovers.

Senior Elijah Strickland, who scored 14 points, and junior Jordan Box, who scored 10 points, were the only players to score in double figures for the Eagles.

Both teams will travel to Austin, TX to play St. Edwards University in another Heartland Conference matchup Feb. 1. The Lady Eagles tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 p.m.
