Eagles and Lady Eagles both split road games

After taking the lead in the final three seconds of the game, the Oklahoma Christian University men’s basketball team beat Texas A&M International University 62–60 Jan. 11 for their first road victory against a conference opponent this season.

Junior Roderick Smith hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds left in the game, which put the Eagles up to the final score. The team shot a combined 11 of 12 from the charity stripe on the game.

Junior Jordan Box led the team with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, Smith finished with 15 points and senior Elijah Strickland rounded out the three Eagle’s in double figures with 12 points.

Despite committing 18 turnovers and 13 points off of said turnovers, the Eagles overcame by outrebounding the Dust Devils 36–27.

Junior Will Lienhard came off the bench to lead the team with 14 rebounds, adding eight points and two blocks. He averages 2.4 blocks per game and leads the Heartland Conference with 36 total blocks.

Playing against another Heartland Conference opponent, St. Mary’s University, the Eagles came back from 10 points down in the final two minutes before falling 70–67 Jan. 13.

Smith led the team in points with 30 and added nine rebounds and four steals, one of which led to a transition dunk and tied the game up at 67 with 27 seconds left in the game.

Although the Eagles were leading the game with one second left on the clock, St. Mary’s hit a corner three with less than a second left to go and broke the tie and to go up 70-67 and win the game.

After St. Mary’s led 27–26 at halftime, the lead changed eight times throughout the second half.

Strickland and Box both had 12 points. Lienhard had nine rebounds and three blocks off the bench.

The Eagles turned the ball over 13 times and were outrebounded by the Rattlers 43–31.

After his performance in the last two games, Smith was named as Eagle of the Week for the second time in three weeks.

The Lady Eagles beat Texas A&M International 84–71 behind two freshmen scoring career highs Jan. 11.

Freshman Katie Mayo scored a career high 28 points on 12 for 17 shooting. She also added six rebounds and four blocks while going perfect from the free throw line.

Freshman Maddison Collyer broke her career high in points, posting 23 points, five assists and three steals.

Junior Addy Clift added 16 points, five rebounds and four steals, and senior Audrey Hayes had 10 points.

The Lady Eagles scored 42 points in the paint and 19 points off 24 Dust Devil turnovers. This win came despite Oklahoma Christian only making two of the 22 attempts from three-point range.

In their game against St. Mary’s, the Lady Eagles were down by 12 entering the second quarter and never closed the gap, falling 72–57 Jan. 13.

Collyer and Mayo both had 13 points and seven rebounds. Clift finshed with 10 points.

Oklahoma Christian shot 30.6 percent from the field, making just 15 of their 49 shots and turned the ball over 18 times, allowing 19 points off those turnovers.

The Eagles will play Jan. 18 when they take on Dallas Baptist University in the Nest at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will travel to Lubbock, TX to play Lubbock Christian University Jan. 20.
