Eagles and Lady Eagles split conference games

Against Heartland Conference opponent Texas A&M International University, the Oklahoma Christian University men’s basketball team fell in overtime 72-70 in the Nest Feb. 8.

Senior Elijah Strickland led the team with 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting and junior Jordan Box posted 20 points, shooting 6-of-13 from the field.

Both teams shot over 45 percent from the field on the game, but the Dustdevils outrebounded the Eagles 33-29 and

Junior Roderick Smith scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, becoming the only Eagle to get more than five rebounds.

Oklahoma Christian led most of the game, but never held a lead of more than eight points. The Dustdevils took the lead, 52-51, on a lay-up with five minutes remaining in the game.

With 26 seconds left, Oklahoma Christian decreased the deficit to two, 61-59, off two made free throws by Smith. Strickland was fouled on the following possession and made one free throw to bring the score within one, 61-60.

The Dustdevils made one of their two free throws after being intentionally fouled in the closing seconds of regulation, putting the Eagles down 62-60.

Down by two with 2.1 seconds left on the clock, the defense collapsed around Strickland when he approached the paint and passed the ball to senior Miroslav Jaksic who dunked it to tie the game.  After Texas A&M International missed a long three-pointer, the game went to overtime.

With three seconds left in overtime, Strickland was intentionally fouled on an inbound pass. He made his first free throw, but missed the second and the Dustdevils secured the rebound to end the game.

In their second game of the homestand, Oklahoma Cristian lead from start to finish in a 97-72 victory against St. Mary’s University Feb. 10.

Shooting 4-4 from the three point line in the first four minutes of play, Strickland finished with 23 points. Box recorded 30 points, shooting 10-of-14 and junior Charles Shaw put up 14 points going 4-of-7 from the field.  All three players shot a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line.

The Eagles shot 60.4 percent from the field on the game and 47.4 percent from behind the three point arc. They outrebounded St. Mary’s 31-25 and scored 38 points in the paint.

Jaksic added 10 points, four rebounds and four assists while Smith finished with nine points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

Through the final eight minutes of play, the Eagle’s lead never dropped below 14 points.

On Feb. 8, the Lady Eagles outscored Texas A&M International in the first three quarters on their way to an 87-72 win.

Freshman Katie Mayo recorded 22 points, pulled in nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

Junior Addy Clift added 12 points and three steals, while junior Carolyne Lawley also had 12 points and three steals to go with nine rebounds and three blocks.

The Eagles outrebounded the Dustdevils 52-40 and had 28 points contributed by bench players.

Senior Audrey Hayes finished with eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Freshman Delyssa Miller came off the bench to add eleven points.

In their game against St. Mary’s, the Lady Eagles were outscored 6-3 in the final minute of the game in a 59-55 loss Feb. 10.

Clift was the only Oklahoma Christian player in double figures, scoring 20 points.

The Lady Eagles led by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but only shot a combined 23.8 percent from three .

Hayes had four points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals on the game.

The men’s team will next play against Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, TX Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Both teams will be back at the Nest against Lubbock Christian University for senior day Feb. 17. Women will play at 1 p.m. and men will play at 3 p.m.
