Eagles go 1-2 against Oklahoma Baptist

In their home opener at Dobson Field, the Oklahoma Christian University men’s baseball team only hit the ball 9 times as they lost to Oklahoma Baptist University 14-8 Feb. 8.

The Eagles went up 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a single from senior Chad Kennedy to bring in sophomore Hunter Markwardt and senior Jake Collins hit a double to score Kennedy.

Collins had three RBI and one run while Kennedy also recorded three RBI but added two runs.

Oklahoma Christian brought six different pitchers to the mound through the game, five of those pitchers allowed three or more runs and only senior Mason McAlister pitched more than two innings.

McAlister started for the Eagles, giving up nine hits, six runs and struck out three batters.

The Eagles were held scoreless in the third inning but gave up five runs as the Bison pulled ahead 6-2. Oklahoma Baptist scored runs in four of the next six innings to win the game by a wide margin.

In the first game of the second day double header, the Eagles held Oklahoma Baptist scoreless in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 9-8 win Feb. 9 in Shawnee, OK.

Kennedy, Collins and senior Kolton Brown all scored twice in the game.

Brown and junior Ryan Ward both finished with two RBI.

Oklahoma Christian went scoreless in the first three innings before scoring six straight runs in the fourth.

Three of those scores came on a missed throw by Oklahoma Baptist’s short stop Brock Carter, allowing junior Callen Crockett to reach second base and junior Garrett Wages, Ward and Brown to pass home plate for a 6-3 advantage.

Kennedy and Collins both scored in the fifth inning. Then, in the top of the eighth, Brown hit a homerun for Oklahoma Christian’s final score to win the game.

Senior Skyler Martin started on the mound for the Eagles, giving up four runs and striking out two batters through four innings. Freshman Robbie Suhr relieved him in the fifth, allowing three runs and throwing two hitters out in three innings.

Collins came in for Suhr in the final inning and struck out two batters to record a save.

In their final game against Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma Christian led 1-0 for the first two innings, but gave up five runs in the third as they fell 7-6 to the Bison in the second game on Feb. 9.

Sophomore Drew Wright scored twice in the first three innings, once off a triple from Kennedy and another on a hit by junior Alex Garcia. Garcia added three RBI.

Markwardt also scored twice, once in third and again in the seventh on a single by Garcia.

Brown hit a homerun in the sixth inning to bring the game within one, 5-4, but after Garcia’s hit scored both Markwardt and Wages in the seventh, the Eagles failed to score another run.

Sophomore Gabe Rodery gave up five runs while striking out nine batters in five innings as the starting pitcher for Oklahoma Christian. Senior Garett Hill relieved him in the sixth and gave up a single run in two innings.

The Eagles will play next in three games against Cameron University. The first game will be in Lawton, OK March 2 at 1 p.m. and the next two will be at Dobson Field at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. March 3.
