Lady Eagles earn title at Oklahoma Intercollegiate

After three-rounds of play, the Oklahoma Christian University women’s golf team placed first in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate competition on Oct. 17 and 18 for the school’s eighth team title and the first of the 2016-17 season.

The top finisher for the Lady Eagles,  sophomore Kate Goodwin, broke Oklahoma Christian’s single-round record when she shot a 7-under-par 65 and followed with a 140 to hold onto a one-shot lead to win the individual title.

“The team really pulled through with our lowest round of the season,” Goodwin said. “I’m super proud of all the girls. Ending the season with a win was a great way to go out and I am so excited for the spring season.”

Goodwin’s record-breaking performance led to a second Heartland Conference women’s player of the week honor.

Goodwin recorded her second career win, joining alumna Arrese Cortadellas and current senior Audrey Meisch as the only players in the program’s history to win multiple tournament titles. Her first win is from back in March in the Diffie Ford-Lincoln Invitational.

Oklahoma Christian had three women in the top six of the 66-woman field, which led them to a first-round 289, followed by a 293, to end the tournament with a 10-stroke victory at 582.

Sophomore Elizabeth Freeman shot the best round of her collegiate career in the final round, shooting a 4-under-68 after a first-round score of 76. She was the Lady Eagles’ top player on Tuesday and recoded her first career top-five finish as she placed fifth at 144.

Another golfer recorded her career-best finish for Oklahoma Christian, as freshman Abigail Rigsby tied for sixth place at 146 after she shot two consecutive rounds of 73.

Other golfers for the Lady Eagles included senior Allison Sell, who tied for 20th at 152 after she shot a 75 and 77; senior Dana Todd shot an 83 followed by an 84 to close tied for 54th at 167 and senior Mindy Stafford finished 60th at 170 after a first-round 87 and then an 83.

This competition marked the end of the Lady Eagles’ fall season. The spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
