Led by McKenzie Stanford and Sydney Hill, the Oklahoma Christian University women’s basketball team strung together a successful second half to seal a 91-76 victory over Southern Nazarene University. The victory moved the Lady Eagles to a record of 3-7 this season.
The Lady Eagles outscored the Crimson Storm in the second half 52-30. Of Stanford’s 28 points, 13 of them came in the second half and Hill scored 10 of her 14 in the second half as well. Hill added a career-best nine assists and six rebounds.
Hill, a senior, said she was very pleased with the way the team came out of the locker room in the second half. “We did not play as well as we would have hoped in the first half,” Hill said. “But we responded well and came out of the locker room with a ton of energy and intensity and took control of the game in the third quarter.”
The Lady Eagles were down at the half 46-39, but jumped out to win the third quarter 26-13.
After the Crimson Storm sunk two free throws to make it 57-48 in its favor, the Lady Eagles strung together a 21-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Hannah Holase to make a 69-65 Oklahoma Christian lead at the end of three quarters.
Oklahoma Christian took the game in its hands and held on for the fourth quarter, recording the win.
Three other Lady Eagles recorded double figures. Daisha Gonzaque had 14, Sarah Parker had 13 and Holasek scored a career-high 13.
Hill said she believes this game will be a spark for upcoming matchups. “Our next game begins our tough Heartland Conference schedule,” Hill said. “I truly believe the way we played today, specifically the second half, will help us going into conference play and I am excited.”
The Lady Eagles are off until they travel to Austin, Texas to take on St. Edward’s University on Dec. 19.
