Lady Eagles soar into the indoor track season

A group of young freshman led the way for the Oklahoma Christian University track team at the two-day Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Track and Field Head Coach Wade Miller said he believes the ladies have some work to do but he also showed some lenience since it was the first meet of the indoor track season.

“The first meet back from Christmas break can be difficult but for the most part I think we competed well,” Miller said.

On the first day, Friday, Maci Rich and Leisa VanVooren each posted top-10 finishes to highlight the day for the Lady Eagles.

Rich placed ninth in the 3,000-meter race with her time of 10:36.58. Katie Jones and Molly McQuirk also ran in the race, with Jones taking 26th with a time of 11:25.30 and McQuirk 28th with a time of 11:34.80

VanVooren placed ninth among 25 runners in the 800-meter in a time of 2:23.05.

Miranda Ostlund proved herself as the Lady Eagles’ top thrower of the meet, competing in the weight throw with a mark of 43 feet 9 inches and placing 14th out of 21.

The meet carried on into Saturday’s events – finals for the sprints, relays and shot put.

VanVooren shone as Saturday’s highlight for the small group of Lady Eagles, finishing 11th of the 22-runner pack in the 600-meter race with a time of 1:40.79.

Fellow freshmen Kayla Parker and Heather Jones competed shortly after VanVooren and ran in the 200-meter race, finishing in 29.06 seconds and 30.24 seconds, respectively.

For the field competitors, Maia Zeno and Alexus Woolly took the responsibility of the shot put for the Lady Eagles. Zeno placed 14th with a top throw of 36 feet 11 inches and Woolly threw 33 feet 10 3/4 inches.

Oklahoma Christian will return to action Jan. 22 and 23 in the Missouri Southern Open Invitational in Joplin, Missouri.
