The Oklahoma Christian University women’s basketball team completed its three-game road series with a win at Newman University on Thursday, sweeping the Lady Jets for the 2014-2015 season.

The Lady Eagles secured a 60-40 win, an even wider margin than their Jan. 15 game against Newman. According to Women’s Basketball Head Coach Stephanie Findley, Oklahoma Christian has shown growth as a team as the season progressed.

“When I watch film from the first time through the conference, we look like a totally different team because we’re playing with confidence and energy,” Findley said. “It’s been great. I hope we can continue and get some consistency.”

McKenzie Stanford led the Lady Eagles with 14 points and 11 assists, recording her second double-double of the season. Jasmine Hinton added 11 points, while Sydney Hill contributed nine points, three assists and four steals.

Mackenzie Brown sank three 3-pointers, recording 11 points in total, three assists and one steal. According to Kaitlyn Morris, Brown gave the Lady Eagles exactly what they needed in the early minutes to get the ball rolling.

“Mackenzie came into the game and was on fire from all over,” Morris said. “She really created that spark we needed at the beginning of the first half.”

According to Hinton, everyone showed optimistic attitudes facing Newman for their second time.

“I was proud of the positive atmosphere we brought to the game,” Hinton said. “Everyone was very encouraging today.”

The Lady Eagles had a 35-21 lead over the Lady Jets at the end of the first half. According to Morris, Oklahoma Christian had to continue the good stretch despite a comfortable lead.

“At halftime we felt great,” Morris said. “We knew we had played a good half but knew we needed to keep that intensity throughout the second half.”

Oklahoma Christian never trailed in the second half. According to Hinton, Kylee Hicks was a key player for maintaining the intensity throughout the game.

“The other team was playing off of [Hicks],” Hinton said. “She used her driving ability and went in and got a couple of buckets. She made the opposing team guard her. I’m proud of [her].”

Hicks gave the Lady Eagles four points while contributing four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

With four games left in the season, Morris said Oklahoma Christian will endure with drive.

“We are playing so well right now,” Morris said. “We want to continue improving each and every game and finish the season strong.”

The Lady Eagles will face Rogers State on Feb. 19 and Arkansas-Fort Smith on Feb. 21 for their last two home games of the season.
