Lady Eagles sweep undefeated conference opponent

The Oklahoma Christian University softball team took down the University of Texas A&M International this weekend in a three-game sweep, the second sweep in conference play for the Lady Eagles.

Softball Head Coach Tom Heath said he has been really pleased with the way his team has played in conference play so far.

“I was very proud of how our team competed this weekend,” Heath said. “As a team, we have been playing good softball the past five games leading up to Texas A&M International.”

On Friday, the Lady Eagles played their first two games. Madison Hagood got the win in the circle in both games for Oklahoma Christian.

The Lady Eagles controlled the first game from the start with 10 runs in the first four innings.

Hagood allowed Texas A&M only two runs in the top of the fifth and the Lady Eagles won 11-2.

In the second game, a four-run sixth inning was key to Oklahoma Christian’s win.

The Lady Eagles went into the bottom of the sixth down 3-2. A Bridget White RBI single tied the game and she scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to bring the lead to 6-3. Hagood’s pitching maintained the team’s lead in the top of the seventh inning to take the second game of the first day.

Haley Squier’s RBI single in the bottom of the third inning was the deciding play in the third game of the series, a 3-2 win for Oklahoma Christian.

Kaylie Upton took the win in the circle for the Lady Eagles and Hagood got the save, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Heath said he believes his team’s confidence has been a major key lately.

“Our mentality was that we were the best team on the field and that was how we played,” Heath said. “Our pitching was good, our defense played well and we scored a lot of runs.”

Senior catcher Niki Davidson went 5-9 on the weekend with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

“We are off to a great start in our conference play,” Davidson said. “We are only going to get better from here.”

Heath said he is proud of the team’s hard work.

“The conference season is what we have been preparing for, playing a tough non-conference schedule,” Heath said. “We are excited about this team and proud of the hard work they put in to get better.”

The Lady Eagles travel to Commerce, Texas to play in a doubleheader against Texas A&M University-Commerce on Tuesday.
