Madison Nordyke helped the Lady Eagles softball team split a doubleheader with Eastern New Mexico University by pitching a one-hit shutout in Saturday’s second game.
Jordan Chism said she was pleased with the way her team bounced back from the first game.
“We had a tough time stringing hits together the first game but I feel like we really turned everything around the second game,” Chism said. “We were much more consistent with our bats and focused on hitting the ball on a line instead of flying out.”
Oklahoma Christian University struck first in the first game, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead after a two-run triple from Lacey Davidson, who later scored on a sacrifice fly from Avery Walker.
But with three runs in the top of the fourth and three runs in an extra inning, Eastern New Mexico took the first game by a count of 6-3. Sheridan Bond led the Lady Eagles from the plate, going 3-4 with a walk. Madison Hagood threw for 7 1-3 innings, striking out eight.
Bond led off the game with a home run in the second game, which began the scoring barrage for the Lady Eagles. Kelsie Finch doubled in two more runs to make it 3-0 after the first inning.
Niki Davidson’s single in the bottom of the fifth scored Jourdan Bruce and Alexis Vanlandingham sealed the run rule for the Lady Eagles.
Meanwhile, Nordyke surrendered one hit throughout the course of five innings to claim her seventh win of the season.
Chism said she was happy with the team’s pitching and play on Saturday.
“All of our pitchers threw great today and our defense really stepped it up the second game,” Chism said. “Even though we lost the first, I thought it was a really good day for us because we proved that we can bounce back from a tough loss.”
The Lady Eagles will travel to Texas Woman’s University on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
