The 2022 fall semester marked the inaugural season for Oklahoma Christian University disc golf.
Bursting onto the scene as one of the only collegiate disc golf programs offering scholarships, the Oklahoma Christian Eagles have peaked at top 10 in the nation in their first season of competition.
Beginning their competitive season on Nov.11, 2022, the Eagles placed 12th in their first-ever tournament and were able to get their first tournament win the following weekend in San Marcos, TX. This success secured them a place in the national tournament coming up on April 5.
Eagle disc golf was back in action this past weekend at the Midwest Collegiate Championships in Winfield, KS. Oklahoma Christian placed second overall, with two top 10 individual finishers, Ethan Tripp and Landon Clark.
Head coach Clavin Ryan said the players’ hard work helped them achieve this result.
“Every one of our players battled and every stroke mattered,” Ryan said. “I’m extremely proud of my team and their resilience.”
Despite being young, the disc golf program is slowly building a strong foundation of success. They currently sit as the No. 11 collegiate team in the country for their division and qualified for nationals in their inaugural season.
Ethan Tripp, a sophomore from Tuttle, OK, spoke on what this season means for the future.
“We have set a benchmark for our program moving forward,” Tripp said. “We made it to the top 10 teams in the nation, won a collegiate tournament and will be competing at nationals in our first year, setting what the expectation will be for years to come.”
The disc golf team has a week off before traveling to Marion, North Carolina, for the national tournament at the North Cove Social Club.
“We continue to put in work and practice every day to make sure we are at our best for nationals,” Tripp said. “We are ready to compete for a national title here in a week or so.”
