The Oklahoma Christian University Softball team fell short to West Texas A&M University as the Lady Buffs hit four home runs to shutout the Lady Eagles in a doubleheader Tuesday.

According to Head Coach Tom Heath, the Lady Eagles struggled on offense on the field.

“We had a tough doubleheader today playing the defending nationals champions,” Heath said. “Our pitching did a good job along with good defense. We had a difficult time hitting the pitchers.”

In the opener, the No. 2-ranked Lady Buffs homered in the third and fourth innings to take a four-point lead. Then, they added another run in the fifth to shutout the Lady Eagles, 5-0. The defending champions extended their win-streak to 15 games.

The Lady Eagles had three hits on the field from Niki Davidson, Monique Elliot and Madison Nordyke. According to Assistant Coach Jessica Ruckman, hitting was the most challenging part in both games.

“We couldn’t get the bats going,” Ruckman said. “We were unable to score any runs in either game.”

Shea Coats pitched eight strikeouts for the Lady Eagles, while Taylor Mosher added two in the second game. According to Ruckman, the pitchers contributed their part to keep Oklahoma Christian in the game.

“Our pitchers did a great job of staying focused the entire game and giving us a chance both games,” Ruckman said.

In game two, West Texas A&M hit two home runs within the opening inning, and defeated the Lady Eagles 5-0 again. Hannah Newcomb threw six innings with six strikeouts to earn the pitching win for West Texas A&M.

Norydke, Courtney Starr, Haley Squier and Kendra Pierce gave Oklahoma Christian the only hits for the second game. The Lady Eagles were in position to score in the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs, however, reliever Tori Bayer struck out Squier and recorded the pitching win.

The Lady Eagles will host No. 7-ranked St. Mary’s University in a three-game Heartland Conference series on Friday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 12 p.m.
