For the first time since 2008, Oklahoma Christian University clutched a series from rival Lubbock Christian University.

In the opener, the Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Chaparrals 5-1. Lubbock returned in the second game, winning 9-0, but Oklahoma Christian sealed the series Saturday with a 4-0 shutout.

Haley Squier said the Lady Eagles played an excellent field game.

“Our hitting was great and our pitchers did an outstanding job of holding the teams to little or no runs scored,” Squier said. “The focus in both games was to come out strong in the beginning to establish a lead in the score and keep building off of that.”

Lubbock Christian took an early lead in the top of the second of the opener. Oklahoma Christian answered with four runs in the bottom of the second as Sheridan Bond advanced on a wild pitch. Monique Elliot tripled, sending Niki Davidson and Jordan Chism home for two RBIs and a run off of Courtney Starr.

The score remained stagnant until the bottom of the sixth when Davidson advanced to home on a center fielder’s error.

Elliot contributed three RBIs, while Starr added another for the Lady Eagles. Shea Coats pitched an 11-strikeout game from the circle.

Game two was a different ballgame. The Lady Chaparrals took eight runs with two homers by the third inning.

Squier threw two strikeouts while Madison Nordyke added one. Lubbock Christian was leading the conference, and according to Squier, they are always a tough team to face.

“The focus for Friday and Saturday was to play the best we could,” Squier said. “Lubbock has amazing players so the focus was to play like we usually do and hopefully be the team that comes out on top.”

On Saturday, Coats pitched a complete-game shutout with six strikeouts. Squier said the Lady Eagles would continue to improve and be strong defensively for the pitchers.

“We will improve by being selective at the plate and not chasing anything we can’t hit,” Squier said. “Playing as a team and as one unit is a huge part of our success as a team.”

The Lady Eagles return to a doubleheader at West Texas A&M University on Tuesday.
