The Lady Eagles softball team dropped the first game of the weekend’s conference matchup against St. Edward’s University, but took the next two games to win the series.
Kelsie Finch said she was happy with the way her team played Saturday.
“We played great on Saturday,” Finch said. “We knew how important that last game was after splitting the first day because that game put us at third in the conference.”
Oklahoma Christian University dropped the first game 6-5. The Hilltoppers pushed past pitcher Madison Hagood for five runs in the in the fifth inning and held on for the 6-5 victory after a late rally from the Lady Eagles. Niki Davidson led Oklahoma Christian from the plate, going 2-4 with an RBI.
Finch’s two-run double in the second game extended the Lady Eagles’ lead to 4-1 in the third inning. Finch credited the hitters’ successes to knowing their opponent from the first day.
“We knew how they were going to throw to us,” Finch said. “We came out and made some adjustments and were able to get some runs on the board.”
Hagood retired the Hilltoppers in order in the top of the seventh to earn the 4-3 save – her second of the season.
Hagood came back on Saturday and started the final game of the series for the Lady Eagles. After a sacrifice fly from Finch that tied the game 1-1, Bridget White drove in Haley Squier and Avery Walker to give the Lady Eagles the 3-1 lead.
After the Hilltoppers’ pitcher threw away a ball to put two Oklahoma Christian runners on base, Davidson doubled in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1.
St. Edward’s scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Hagood forced a groundout to end the game with a 6-3 victory, taking the series.
Finch said she was excited to see what will come from this series victory.
“We had great defense and pitching this series,” Finch said. “We are playing really good as we near the end of our schedule and prepare for the conference tournament.”
The Lady Eagles host Fort Hays State University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
