After a 10-2 home victory against crosstown rival the University of Central Oklahoma, the Lady Eagles softball team fell short of a doubleheader sweep with an 11-9 loss to the Lady Bronchos in their second game on Tuesday.

Senior Kendra Pierce said Oklahoma Christian University performed well on both sides of the ball Tuesday.

“I thought we played really well,” Pierce said. “We all hit well and our defense was great. We had pitcher battling in the circle and hitters battling in the box.”

In the first game, the Lady Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead at the bottom of the first inning off a two-RBI single from Niki Davidson.

UCO answered back in the top of the second inning, sending two runners over the plate in separate plays, tying the score 2-2. But a sacrifice fly from Sheridan Bond allowed Madison Nordyke to reach home, edging out a 3-2 Lady Eagle lead.

The Lady Bronchos failed to score again for the remainder of the game. Oklahoma Christian added seven more runs throughout the third, fifth and sixth innings, sealing a final score of 10-2.

In game two of the doubleheader, UCO scored once in the first inning with a sacrifice flyout-RBI. Three singles in the first inning sent home runners Monique Elliot, Pierce and Kelsie Finch, giving the Lady Eagles a 3-1 lead.

UCO sent three more across the plate in the second inning, regaining its lead at 4-3. Oklahoma Christian failed to score in the second.

After the Lady Bronchos put one more run on the scoreboard in the top of the third, the Lady Eagles swiped back a temporary lead after a double form Haley Squire sent two home and later crossed the plate herself after walk with the bases loaded.

But Oklahoma Christian’s 6-5 lead would not last long. The Lady Bronchos scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, answered by only one run from the Lady Eagles – a Nordyke groundout that allowed Davidson to score, pulling Oklahoma Christian to a 8-7 disadvantage.

The Lady Eagles tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning at 9-9, with a single from Davidson that led to Pierce and Courtney Starr scoring. But UCO scored another run in both the sixth and seventh innings, while Oklahoma Christian remained scoreless after the fifth inning. The final score was 11-9.

According to Pierce, The Lady Eagles’ consistent aggressive approach kept the game within reach right to the end.

“I felt like we never gave up, in the second game especially, and that’s key in winning,” Pierce said. “We played like a team today and it was an awesome feeling. No matter the outcome, if we play like that every game, I have no doubt this will be a great season for us.”

The Oklahoma Christian softball team travels to St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas on Friday for a three-game series during the weekend.
