FIFA Women’s World Cup
The United States women’s national team lost to Sweden in the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup.
Despite the U.S. taking ten times as many shots on target compared to Sweden, the game was 0-0 after regulation and extra time, leading to a penalty shootout. It took 7 rounds before a winner was decided and made U.S.’ Alyssa Naeher the first goalkeeper in FIFA history to score a penalty kick in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Swedish striker Lina Hurtig scored the game winning kick.
Sweden would go on to defeat Japan 2-1 to enter the semifinal round. They will play Spain on Aug. 15 at 3 a.m. Central Time.
Swimming
The 2023 world aquatics championships in Fukuoka, Japan, ended on July 30.
The United States finished third in overall medal tally. Despite winning 22 silver and 15 bronze medals, the team’s seven gold medals were surpassed by Australia’s 15 gold medals and The People’s Republic of China’s 20.
