Sports Brief: Oct. 12

MLB postseason

The wild card rounds for the 2022 MLB postseason have come to a close. 

The Philadelphia Phillies, who are in the postseason for the first time since 2009, beat the St. Louis Cardinals in two games to advance. The New York Mets were upset by the lower-seeded San Diego Padres to round out the two NLDS series’.

On the American League side, the Cleveland Guardians swept the Tampa Bay Rays while the Seattle Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Phillies will take on the Atlanta Braves and the Padres will face off against the one-seed Los Angeles Dodgers on the NL side. As for the AL side, The Mariners will go against division rival Houston Astros while the Guardians will go against the New York Yankees. Each division series is best of five.

College Football

The latest poll for college football features Alabama dropping another spot to No. 3 as Ohio State took over No. 2. UCLA and jumped seven spots to No. 11 within their second week ranked in the top 25.  New entries to the top 25 include Texas, Illinois, and James Madison.

Oklahoma State defeated Texas Tech on Saturday, , remaining  undefeated as the No. 8 team in the country. Oklahoma lost their third game in a row 49-0 against Texas during the Red River Rivalry . Oklahoma sits at the bottom of the Big 12 with an 0-3 conference record.

NFL week 5

The Philadelphia Eagles remain the league’s only unbeaten team, moving to 5-0 with a win against the Arizona Cardinals. This outcome was the result of a  missed field goal by Matt Amendola, which would have won the game if time had not expired.

The latest NFL power rankings have the Buffalo Bills jump the Eagles as the league’s top team and the Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs rounding out the top three. The Green Bay Packers dropped out of the top five to No. 8 after losing to the New York Giants, who NFL.com had at No. 19 before jumping to 13 this week.

NBA tip-off

The NBA tip-off their regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Going into the season, defending champions Golden State Warriors are favorites to win the NBA Finals and defend their crown. 

NBA.com has the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Clippers as the next two favorites to win it all, with the Denver Nuggets and the Memphis Grizzlies finishing the consensus of the top five teams heading into the regular season. 

Luka Doncic is the current favorite to win the MVP ahead of Nikola Jokic, who has won the award in back-to-back seasons.
