Sports Brief: Oct. 21

MLB League Championship Series’

The MLB postseason continues as the top two seeds in the National League both lost in the divisional round. 

The San Diego Padres knocked off the Los Angeles Dodgers, who ended the regular season with the league’s best record at 111-51. The Philadelphia Phillies beat the two-seed Atlanta Braves in their first postseason appearance since 2011. The Phillies and Padres are squaring in the NLCS for the right to go to the World Series.

The NLCS is currently tied at one game a piece, with game three coming on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. 

For the American League, the top-seeded Houston Astros took care of business, sweeping the Seattle Mariners. The New York Yankees fought off the Cleveland Guardians in five games to move on to face the Astros. 

NFL Update

As the NFL enters week 7, the Philadelphia Eagles remain the only unbeaten team at 6-0, yet are listed as the No. 2 team in this week’s power rankings via NFL.com. The Buffalo Bills beat the Kansas City Chiefs in week six to remain at the No. 1 spot.

Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys are getting their starting quarterback back as Dak Prescott has been medically cleared. Prescott had surgery on his right thumb after their week one game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

The Cowboys went 4-1 in Prescott’s absence.

College Football Update

No. 2 Alabama lost their first game of the season to Tennessee, as did Oklahoma State, who lost to TCU.. Alabama dropped to No. 6 in the AP poll and Oklahoma State went to No. 11. Tennessee is now in the top 5 at No. 3 and TCU leaped to No. 8. 

Tulane and North Carolina have both cracked the top 25 in week eight.

Local Sports Update

Oklahoma football broke their three-game losing streak by beating Kansas 52-42 to move to 4-3 this season. The Sooners do not play this coming week due to their bye. 

Oklahoma State football lost its first game of the year to TCU 43-40 in overtime. They dropped to No. 11 in the AP poll following the loss. Oklahoma State is also off for its bye week this Saturday. 

The Oklahoma City Thunder opened their season with a win against the Minnesota Timberwolves by a score of 115-108.
