Track and Field looking forward to the outdoor season

Most sports play only one season, but there is a notable exception to this rule.

Track and field athletes compete in an indoor season and outdoor season. With the indoor season coming to a close, the men and women’s teams are setting their sights on the outdoor season.

Two of these athletes are sophomore Verrell McBride and senior Lawanda Harvey. McBride is a sprinter from Norman, OK, and Harvey is also a sprinter from Frisco, TX. Harvey and McBride, who both grew up athletes, sayt hey both found inspiration in professional athletes. McBride said his biggest inspiration growing up was Kevin Durant, and Harvey said hers came from Sanya Richards-Ross and Alyson Felix.

Both athletes believe they accomplished goals set for themselves during the indoor season. Harvey broke the school record earlier this month in the 200-meter race with a time of 24.58 seconds, which broke her previous record of 24.97 seconds. McBride’s last finishes this season were a 7.02 in the 60-meter and 21.88 in the 200-meter.

When asked about her indoor season, Harvey said she was happy with her performance and is looking forward to competing during the outdoor season.

“I feel like my indoor went great,” Harvey said. “I beat one of my goals I set at the beginning and am still hoping to qualify for nationals this indoor season. I’m definitely expecting to break some more records and qualify for nationals this outdoor season.”

McBride shared Harvey’s enthusiasm for the outdoor season as he also reached the goals he set for himself throughout the indoor season.

“I completed my goals in running a personal best time in the 100 and 200,” McBride said. “My expectations for the outdoor season are high, but I believe they I can achieve them.”

Both players have high expectations for the team heading into the new season, whether it be competing at a high level or, as Harvey put it, having a good season.

“I don’t really have any expectations for the team other than everyone just running the best they possibly can,” McBride said. “I just want us as a team to go out and go toe to toe with all of our competition.”

When it comes to training, both athletes are sprint runners for the team and their training leading up to the season consists of a lot of high intensity.

“When the outdoor season comes, our practices consist of running less repetitions, but at a high intensity level,” McBride said. “We lift twice a week, mainly focusing on strengthening our lower body.”
