Weekly Sports Update Feb. 18-24

MLB lockout

The MLB lockout has now reached over 85 days and is threatening the 2022 season more than ever. The players and owners set a hard deadline for Feb. 28 for a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement. If a deal is not made by the deadline, games will be canceled.

The two sides have been meeting daily for three days. Sources around the league remain pessimistic that a deal will be made and are preparing for games to be missed in the 2022 season.

The league wants to allow one month for spring training whenever a deal is made. Opening day is currently set for March 31 if a deal is made by the Feb. 28 deadline. 

Olympics final medal count

         The 24th Winter Olympic Games have come to an end. Norway led the way in the medal count with 37 total medals and 16 gold. Germany ranked second with 27 total medals and 12 gold. The United States ranked third with 25 total medals and 8 gold. 

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers made headlines this week with an Instagram post on Feb. 21, which many speculated was a goodbye to the Packers.

“To my teammates, past and current, you are the icing on the beautiful cake we call our job; football,” Rodgers said. “The friendships we have will transcend our collective time in this game.” 

Ever since a report by ESPN insider Adam Schefter claimed the Packers and Rodgers do not get along, drama between Rodgers and the Green Bay front office has flooded headlines for the better part of a year. Rumors whether Rodgers will be traded, retire or force his way out of the Packers are swirling.

On Feb. 24, Dianna Russini of ESPN reported a decision by Rodgers about his future with the team will be coming soon.  

Troy Aikman

Fox NFL commentator Troy Aikman is reportedly making plans to  leave the network to become the newest Monday Night Football commentator on ESPN. New York Post sports columnist Andre Marchland reported the deal is worth at least $17.5 million over five years. The deal would make him the highest paid commentator, passing Tony Romo with CBS.

NBA all-star weekend

Team LeBron beat team Durant in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game with a score of 163-160. Stephen Curry won the All-Star Game MVP scoring 50 points.

Team Cavaliers, made up of Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, won the skills competition. Karl-Anthony Town won the 3-point contest and Obi Toppin won the dunk contest.  

NBA post all-star break

Coming out of the All-Star break, the NBA power rankings are as follows.

The Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies remain in the top two spots as the Miami Heat shifts to No. 3. The Boston Celtics move to No. 4 from No. 7, and the Denver Nuggets to No. 5 from No. 9.

Juwan Howard

Michigan head basketball coach Juwan Howard has been suspended for five games and fined $40,000 for striking Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft after an altercation following a game Feb. 20.

College basketball week 16 AP poll

As March Madness inches closer, week 16 rankings for college basketball are official.

Gonzaga remains at No. 1 while Arizona passes Auburn forthe No. 2 spot. Auburn, Purdue and Kansas complete the top 5. Iowa made a new appearance in the top 25 as did Saint Mary’s.
