Weekly sports update Oct.17-22

NFL week six highlights

NFL week six brought the Jacksonville Jaguars their first win of the season, breaking their 20-game losing streak. They beat the Miami Dolphins 23-20. Their losing streak had lasted since week two of last season, so head coach Urban Meyer got his first NFL regular season win. The Detroit Lions are now the NFL’s only winless team. They lost 34-11 to the Cincinnati Bengals this past week. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, holding Justin Herbert and company to only six points, their lowest of the season.

Following their scandal with former Head Coach Jon Gruden, the Las Vegas Raiders, with interim Head Coach Rich Bissacia, beat the Denver Broncos 34-24.

The Cleveland Browns are experiencing some bad luck with injuries, with injuries to star offensive players including quarterback Baker Mayfield, top wide receivers Odell Beckam Jr. and Jarvis Landry, and top running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. The Arizona Cardinals remained the league’s only unbeaten team with the win.

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 24-14, moving Rodgers to 22-5 in his career against the Bears. The Dallas Cowboys won an overtime thriller in New England against the Patriots after a game-winning 30-yard touchdown throw from Dak Prescott to Ceedee Lamb.

MLB postseason update

The MLB postseason continues as the league championship series gets down to elimination games.

The Atlanta Braves have world series favorites. Los Angeles Dodgers on the brink of elimination leading the series 3-1. With several clutch hits from third baseman Austin Riley and walk-off wins in the first two games, the Braves are one win away from the 2021 World Series. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on the brink of elimination, leading the series 3-1.

The Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox have been locked into a tight series. The Astros are leading 3-2, going into game six with a chance to close it out. Shortstop Carlos Correa has continued his impressive play in the postseason, hitting for a .324 average and at .910 ops. Correa’s contract with Houston is up at the end of this season, raising the question of where he will go next.

The decisive game six will take place on Friday, Oct. 22 as Boston looks to extend the series to a game seven, and Houston looks to advance to the World Series for the third time in five years.

NBA regular season begins

The NBA regular season began on Oct. 19 when the defending champions Milwaukee Bucks beat the Brooklyn Nets 127-104, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-114.

Ben Simmons drama

The start of the 2021-2022 season is not a smooth one for the Philadelphia 76ers with drama heating up between the team and all-star point guard Ben Simmons. Simmons made it known over the offseason that he did not want to play for the team. Simmons’ attitude has reportedly been bad at 76ers practice, refusing to participate in drills and giving little effort. In the past week, Simmons was kicked out of practice by Head Coach Doc Rivers, fined by the team for violation of team policy and suspended until further notice. Star center Joel Embiid spoke on the situation.

“At this point I don’t really care about that man, he does whatever he wants,” Embiid said. “We are not here to babysit.”
