This week in sports brought us the opening of the 2021 NFL regular season, a couple college football upsets and a viral cat at a football game. In addition an update on where standings are in the MLB and the Toronto Blue Jays broke a club record.

NFL regular season kickoff

The 2021 NFL regular season has begun after a lengthy training camp and preseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Pat Mahomes had a battle against the Cleveland Browns. After a fumbled punt, Kansas City turned it around and came out with a win 33-29. The Los Angeles Rams with new quarterback Matt Stafford, whom they acquired via trade over the offseason, opened their season on Sunday Night Football with a win against the Chicago Bears. After a contentious offseason for the Green Bay Packers, they came out flat against the New Orleans Saints losing 38-3 with the help of Jameis Winston’s five touchdown passes.

College football upsets

Week two of college football shook up the rankings with several upsets. Unranked Arkansas beat No. 15 Texas in the return of the rivalry game. In addition, Jacksonville State beat Florida State on the final play of the game that left the Seminoles stunned.

Oregon went into Columbus to play Ohio State and announced themselves by beating the Buckeyes 35-28, causing a shift in the college football rankings. Alabama and Georgia still hold the top two spots, Oklahoma is now ranked third and Oregon has moved up to fourth.

Viral cat

A cat at the Miami, Appalachian State game went viral over the weekend. The cat was hanging off the ledge of the nosebleeds with students below ready with an American flag as a safety net. The cat eventually dropped from the ledge to fall safely to the flag below as the crowd went wild. The recorded video went viral on several social media platforms.

Blue Jays break a club record

The Toronto Blue Jays set a club record by scoring 47 runs in a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. They scored six runs in game one, 11 in games two and three, and 22 runs in the final game.

Weekly MLB standing update

Standings in the MLB are still changing as wild card spots and some division leaders are still in question. The Toronto Blue Jays went 8-2 in their last 10 games and are now tied with the New York Yankees for the top two wild card spots in the American League. In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals have sprung into the second wild card spot after being three games back just a week ago. The San Diego Padres, who held the spot previously, now trail the Cardinals by a full game.
