SGA Weekly Update

The Student Government Association met for their final weekly senate meeting of the semester on Oct. 26. The meeting discussed the academic calendar, upcoming events from Eagle Eye and a rundown of the Homecoming schedule.

President Micah Burk went over the academic calendar, which was being questioned due to conflicts with the student body schedule. Since COVID, the academic calendar has shifted to accommodate students.

The committees considered various options for the academic calendar, discussing whether it should change or remain the same. The pros consisted of a longer winter break, students who live further away having lighter travel, wintersession classes being offered and more study abroad opportunities. The cons consisted of summer boot camps and internships having schedule conflicts, forcing students back to campus unexpectedly and mental health being affected due to not being in the campus community during winter break.

The options in question were sent to Dr. Jeff McCormack to review and consider before making a final decision for next semester.

Eagle Eye presented their upcoming events. The volleyball home game on Oct. 28 vs. Texas-Permian Basin will be at 6 p.m., followed by another volleyball home game vs. Angelo State at 2p.m. on Oct. 29. The men’s soccer home game vs. Eastern New Mexico is also scheduled for Oct. 29th at 7p.m.

The Homecoming schedule was presented. The week’s festivities will begin on Oct. 28 with the 48-hour build, lasting through Monday, Oct. 31. Trick the Trail will be held on Oct. 31 at 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Lighting of the Commons will be held on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. On Nov. 2, there will be a campus-wide devo from 7-8 p.m. The fall musical Brigadoon will have its first showing on Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. A pep rally will also be held, taking place on Nov. 4 at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, Nov. 5, will end Homecoming week with a chapel from 10-11 a.m., followed by the parade from 11:15-11:30 a.m. The tailgate and carnival will take place from 11:30-1:00 p.m. Finally, the women’s and men’s basketball games will take place at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
