From student concerns to campus community engagement, the Student Government Association is beginning to plan this year to make sure students have a place to be heard at Oklahoma Christian University.
Junior Chloe Gates, SGA president, explains how one of the organization’s main priorities is to represent all students on campus.
“SGA is a voice for all students! It’s important for them to know that any concerns or ideas they have can be brought to us and we can directly advocate for their cause,” Gates said. “We can help be a voice when they might not know where to go forward.”
Gates explains her personal vision for how SGA can enhance student life.
“My main goal is to boost student involvement from all areas of the student body,” Gates said. “We want representation from all areas of the campus, major, grades and athletics.”
SGA is exploring ways to maintain a stronger and more united student body at Oklahoma Christian.
“We are looking to increase involvement and find ways for students to make more connections,” Gates said.
Gates hopes these efforts will create a more welcoming environment for students.
The goal is part of SGA’s effort to bring students across all aspects of campus together.
As a way to improve student connections, they are working to highlight certain fields on campus.
“We are planning to work with athletes and coaches to get them more involved,” Gates said.
SGA has a system for ensuring all student needs are addressed.
“It depends on the situation but we typically start with the most urgent and move from there,” Gates said.
According to Gates, you don’t have to be in SGA to ensure your ideas and thoughts are heard.
“If students are not in SGA but want to have a voice, they can always bring their ideas to us and we will make sure their voices will be heard,” Gates said.
Gates expresses how SGA is not meant for just a certain group of people.
“We always have open meetings on Wednesday nights and anyone can come and see what it’s like,” Gates said. “I think it’s great to get an idea of what we do each week and what they can do to be involved.”
Gates said that being involved in SGA in her college career, as she was secretary last year, has enhanced her college experience beyond academic life.
“SGA has given me a community of friends and a fun way to be involved on campus,” Gates said. “It has helped me get to know people I might not have had the opportunity to meet outside of my major.”
Gates and SGA are working to reach all students on campus not typically involved in student government.
SGA continues to be a place where students work together for the betterment of students during the 26-27 academic year and beyond.
