OC Students Celebrate Halloween Past and Present

Oklahoma Christian University students cherish Halloween memories while creating new traditions.

Whether dressing up or organizing a movie night, students are getting ready for the holiday.

Junior Meagan Tubbs explains her plans for Oct. 31.

“My parents live in North Edmond, so a bunch of my friends and I are gonna go to my house, and we’re gonna watch a little Halloween movie,” Tubbs said. “My mom’s making dinner, and then we’re gonna decorate cookies, have apple cider, of course, and it’ll be really chill.”

Tubbs gives details on the meal for the night.

“She is making chili for dinner,” Tubbs said.

Many films are related to Halloween, but one in particular is special to Tubbs.

“I love ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,’” Tubbs said.

Tubbs reflects on a good Halloween memory.

“It’s also so fun, like getting to see kids dress up and be so excited,” Tubbs said. “Trunk or Treat at my church, this one girl she dressed up as Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ and just pretended like she was her, and she was like, ‘Oh yeah, I wrote these books.’”

Tubbs looks back on one of her favorite childhood Halloween memories.

“My mom would sub at the elementary school we all went to, and we dressed up as the cavemen from ‘The Croods,’” Tubbs said. “I got to be the crazy little girl, and it was just the best time.”

The night brings back special times with her family for Tubbs.

“It’s something we did together as a family, and it’s a memory that we still look back on and laugh about,” Tubbs said.

Sophomore Kinslee Corley explains how she plans to celebrate.

“I think I will go watch a movie,” Corley said. “I think they’re playing scary movies this weekend for Halloween in theaters.”

She looks back on dressing up in years past.

“One year I dressed up as Ariel, and I had a bright red long wig, and I felt super awesome. Like I was just unstoppable, and it was really fun,” Corley said.

Junior Katie McCook discusses how she is organizing an event.

“A friend of mine, Avie, is throwing a Halloween party in our apartment where we will paint pumpkins and watch a movie,” McCook said. “There will be a costume contest.”

She explains the movie night details.

“I don’t know what movie yet,” McCook said. “I’m hoping we watch ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.’”

Freshman Brielle Fredrickson plans to make the most of Halloween night.

“I’m going to a haunted house in the city with my friends, and I’m dressing up as Greg Heffley,” Fredrickson said. “My friend is dressing up as Roderick, and then we’re gonna go trick-or-treating.”

She has a lot of experience with haunted houses.

“I went to Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Florida, and they do a Halloween night,” Fredrickson said. “It’s really scary, and we went to like five different haunted houses there.”

Fredrickson enjoys a classic Halloween movie.

“I would say my favorite Halloween movie is ‘Hocus Pocus,’” Fredrickson said.
