Weekly Wellness

This week’s health tip is a simple adjustment you can make in your life: adding a 5–10 minute walk after each meal.

It does not need to be an intense workout, a long walk around campus, or another task to add to an already busy schedule. A short walk after breakfast, lunch, or dinner can be as simple as taking the longer route to your next class, walking around the block, calling a friend while you move, or taking a lap through campus before sitting back down to study.

There is evidence behind the habit. After eating, the body breaks food down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream and causes blood sugar to rise. Your muscles use glucose for energy when you walk, so moving soon after a meal can help reduce how high that post-meal blood-sugar rise becomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specifically suggests starting with a 10-minute walk after dinner as a practical way to fit physical activity into a daily routine.

The goal is not to make every meal feel like a workout. Instead, think of it as a small habit that supports your energy and gives you a moment away from screens, assignments, and stress. If walking after every meal does not fit your schedule, start with just one, perhaps a quick walk after lunch or dinner.
