“Just go,” Sandoval said. “It’s 45 minutes of your time, and you’re only going to benefit from it. No matter where you’re coming from, you’re going to walk away learning something new, and it’s going to be helpful information. I know, whenever I show up, I’m going to learn information that I didn’t even know I needed to know.”

“It is really encouraging to see OC facilitate this type of environment, where we can take a moment and celebrate our international students and appreciate their cultures,” Bian said. “The homecoming directors and the executive directors are all very aware of what cultural appropriation is and that is not the purpose of this theme. I think there is a way to celebrate someone’s culture without appropriating it, and I think that we are going to do a good job of that.”
“[Women] face unique challenges both in the classroom and in the workplace,” Bian said. “Even though representation for women in college has become equivalent to men, the number of women majoring in STEM fields is still drastically lower than men, and the number of women enrolling in graduate STEM education is fewer still. Our goal is to improve retention of women in STEM at the undergraduate level through mentorship, education and support.”
