Though the weather outside may be frightful, Downtown in December could make the season more delightful.

Downtown in December is a series of events held in Oklahoma City throughout the holiday season.

Some Downtown in December attractions include an outdoor ice rink at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, pop-up shops in Midtown and snow tubing at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Bryan Williams, computing services director at Oklahoma Christian University, said he and his family have attended several Downtown in December events in past years, including ice skating that was previously located in front of the Civic Center.

“We went ice skating at the Civic Center for Downtown in December when the girls were in high school,” Williams said. “They had yet to build the more permanent ice rink, so then it was just one of those wooden ones. It was a good time for the whole family….”

Williams said many friends from Oklahoma Christian have enjoy the holiday attractions as well.

“There were quite a few people there,” Williams said. “I was surprised to see some of my colleagues on skates.”

Churches from across the area use the holiday events as special outings for their youth groups.

“I first went with my youth group, and then I took my family a couple of days later to a different Downtown in December event,” sophomore Jade George said. “This was probably about two or three years ago that we went ice skating and it was something I have really enjoyed taking my family to go do.”

George said she is also interested in many of the holiday themed pop-up shops in Midtown, a new addition to Downtown in December this year.

The shops will be open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and then on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Each day the shops are open is a new experience, as the shops rotate opening days.

“At first I wasn’t completely interested, but as I looked at the list I think I would like to go check out shops like Savvy and Boho Gypsy,” George said. “Hopefully my mom will want to take me, then I can have a shopping friend while everyone from campus is back home.”

Local shops contribute to the pop-up attractions located at NW 10th and Harvey, next to Bleu Garten.

“When I went to the shops along Midtown I think I was with my family and we had just finished going out to eat,” sophomore Zachary Vanover said. “We were just walking back to our car and my sister saw them selling stuff and so we went on over and checked it out.”

Downtown in December also features one of the largest man-made snow tubing slopes, standing at 150 ft and located inside the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The ballpark includes a smaller kiddie slope for the younger patrons.

“Another time we went inner tubing down the stands and it was freezing that day we went,” Williams said. “You would slide past the seats and the stands and would end up past first base towards second base.”

Tickets for tubing are $12 per person. The slope is open in all weather, as the snow is artificial.

Besides the three mentioned, Downtown in December includes 27 other events, hosted by various local companies in the downtown area of Oklahoma City.
