The freshmen class has the chance to sing, read poetry or showcase a talent to their peers at an open mic night in the Oklahoma Christian University student center on Feb. 12.

Freshmen Class Vice President Chaise Lucero helped create the the event.

“All the freshmen officers came up with the idea when we were brain-storming what to do and this was the top choice,” Lucero said. “It is for freshmen, and people can come do poetry and sing songs and play the guitar. We want people to show off their talents.”

Lucero said she hopes this is an event that can be something the freshmen class will want to be involved in.

“I am excited to see the big turn out of the freshmen class for this event and watch people have a good time,” Lucero said. “People need to just come out and try it for a little bit because they might surprise themselves and want to perform.”

Lucero said that positivity between classmates is something she hoped for when she helped plan this event.

“I think that it would be really positive to have the freshmen class come together and let everyone just hang out with each other and help the class bond,” Lucero said.

Freshmen Counselor Kendall Mayes said the freshmen class presented the idea to him and he was excited to see how the event would be benefit the class.

“We want people to sing in any way, shape or form,” Mayes said. “We are also looking for some poetry people as well. We want it to be fun and we want the audience or crowd to be big. We want it to be a cool opportunity to showcase some talent.”

Mayes said he hopes some of the acts from Fanfare come out and perform again.

“We have talked about doing this in the past,” Mayes said. “I encourage all freshmen to come. Even if you aren’t a performer, it will be a good time to hang out and take a break from homework and it should be a good time.”

Freshman Megan Baxter said she will be singing with Gracie Vanlandingham the song “The Only One” by Sam Smith.

“I am really excited because I always get a little nervous when I sing but it is always super fun,” Baxter said. “It will be in front of all my classmates so that will be good.”

Baxter said that the freshmen class would benefit from this event by getting closer as a class.

“I love to hear people share their talents with others because Oklahoma Christian is a community and it’s not always about school, and it’s about what people are good at and what they like to do,” Baxter said. “It is a cool opportunity.”

Baxter said that many of her classmates who did not get to perform in Fanfare would like to show everyone at an event like this some of their talents.

“This is another thing that can bring us together,” Baxter said.

Sign-ups for the open mic night can be found in the student life office. This event is only open for freshmen participants.
