Inaugural Harmony event held at Oklahoma Christian

Representatives from Church of Christ-affiliated universities across the nation competed in the inaugural event, Harmony, Saturday, March 30,  in Baugh auditorium. Abilene Christian University walked away as overall champions after winning awards for favorite music, lyrics and costumes.

Harmony is, as the chief executive officer of Harmony, Tyler Clark, puts it, their “big bang event.” Church of Christ sister schools from across the country come together and present the winners of their version of Spring Sing and bring two of their hosts.

The idea was being talked about, and Clark, also the president of the Oklahoma Christian Student Government Association, took action on putting a task force together and bringing this idea to life.

“The idea of bringing the sister Church of Christ schools’ respective sing events together has kind of hovered above the proverbial Church of Christ waters for a while,” Clark said. “So, I can’t claim I came up with the idea, but I did take action and put a team together and did the research.”

In addition to each school’s two hosts, the show’s host was a member of the viral ministry the Skit Guys.

“The Skit Guys ministry, they’re two fathers that are Christian comedians,” Clark said. “They create video content and put on these hilarious skits. Tommy Woodard of the Skit Guys is going to be emceeing the event. So, he’ll have us laughing the whole way through.”

The show was also broadcasted at each university and multiple Church of Christ churches across the nation. The show offered an interactive voting app, allowing viewers to vote on their favorite shows across categories.

“While this is all going on physically on Oklahoma Christian’s campus this first year, a large part of the business plan is to sell live interactive broadcasts,” Clark said. “We’ve talked with Christian high schools, churches, youth groups and the sister colleges, and they have the opportunity to purchase a broadcast to watch it live. So, people can come to the local church or high school, and you can come wearing your alma mater’s gear, and then you get to vote.”

The three categories audience members can vote on are favorite music, lyrics and best costume. After the voting on these categories are done, an overall winner is decided.

According to Clark, the competition of Harmony is more of an added bonus as opposed to the sole focus.

“Our main priority is to showcase the schools and to celebrate God’s providence through Christian education,” Clark said. “In order to draw the schools in to the make the students interested, we believe there has to be an element of competition, even though that’s not our primary focus. Imagine Spring Sing without the competition; it wouldn’t be as fun.”

Although the inaugural year was hosted at Oklahoma Christian University, Clark’s vision for Harmony is to have it alternate hosts between each of the sister schools.
