Iota Kappa Phi becomes back-to-back Spring Sing champions

The women of Iota Kappa Phi claimed their second Spring Sing victory Saturday night, as the Big Bad Wolves and Little Reds of “Into the Woods” became back-to-back champions at the 50th Anniversary Spring Sing Show: The Year of the Gold.

“All I can say is wow—it is hard to put into words,” Iota Spring Sing Director Jourdan Bruce said. “Knowing that we won first on the 50th year of Spring Sing and our 10th year as a club is a crazy thought, but then again, we put in so much work and so much time to make this possible. Being back-to-back champions feels amazing because we achieved our goal for our club.”

To meet the qualifications of this year’s theme, The Year of the Gold, clubs had to select themes from award-winning movies, television shows and musicals. According to Bruce, Iota chose their theme of “Into the Woods” before the overall theme was even announced.

“We wanted to go with something everybody knew,” Bruce said. “‘Into the Woods’ has so many fairytale stories in it that we knew we would have a wide range of characters to choose from.”

When Bruce and her co-director, Ciara Abila, were selected as this year’s directors, she said they initially felt intimidated, as they would be following Iota’s 2017 “Beauty and the Beast” performance and the club’s first, first-place show.

“We knew that the bar was raised with ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and what we had to realize was that we had to find a way to keep raising the bar,” Bruce said. “There was no other option. You have to find ways to be creative and be different, and that is what we did. We raised the bar and brought our vision of a creative show to life.”

The men of Kappa Sigma Tau placed second in this year’s Spring Sing show, as the Mad Hatters and Cheshire Cats of Alice in Wonderland. In third place, and awarded Best Vocals, were the Tracy Turnblads and Amber Von Tussles of Gamma Rho’s “Hairspray” show. The men of Psi Epsilon finished in fourth place with their rendition of the 1930s bowling short film, “Strikes and Spares.”

Psi’s performance was also named the Most Original Show, Best Video Blurb, Best Lyrics and Student Favorite. Kappa picked up the award for Best Choreography, as well as was named both Audience and Faculty Favorite. The women of Phi Omega Nu won Best Costume for their costume change mid-show during their Wonder Woman performance.

“Phi is a club that emphasizes the leader, the driven and the kind,” Phi Spring Sing Director Carson Hicks said. “Wonder Woman seemed like a good choice because she is such a powerful, confident and compassionate woman. We wanted a theme that our girls could have fun with and feel a connection to.”

For their final semester as a social service club on the Oklahoma Christian University campus, the women of Pi Zeta Phi won the Unity Award for their work supporting the other clubs during all of Spring Sing. And, in their first year back from suspension, the men of Chi Lambda Phi won Best Banner, which was inspired by their James Bond Spring Sing show.

“With only 25 percent of our guys having been in a Chi show before, it meant that we had to teach two whole generations on how to do certain moves,” Chi Spring Sing Director Caleb Eppes said. “This meant that moves Dylan [my co-director] and I found simple, like the Chi jig, needed more time to be taught since less guys knew how to do it.”

As another year of Spring Sing wraps up at Oklahoma Christian, Bruce said the weeks of hard work finally paid off for every club, as it is always a time to grow closer to one another and bond over a love of the 50-year Oklahoma Christian tradition.

“Our experience has been so crazy,” Bruce said. “We have enjoyed it, but we had to learn to balance time, homework, friends and find time to eat and sleep. In the end, it was worth the hard work because our sisters grew closer together and we genuinely enjoyed performing our show.”
