Meet the Spring Sing Hosts

While Oklahoma Christian University’s production of Spring Sing works to showcase social service clubs’ and the freshman class’ hard work and dedication to create exciting shows,

the hosts’ key involvement in the show is what really “drives the story forward.”

Performing with artistic distinctness, the hosts’ performances give the show a professional feeling amongst all the humor and jarring of the clubs as they compete for the coveting Spring Sing title.

The hosts this year include JD Martin, Kayla Gomez, Sydney May, Megan Deister, Kayti Alvarez, Trent McAlister, Jarrett Carter, and David Kurt. Each one hopes to bring a unique and special voice to the table, adding a new dimension to the show with each performance.

Q. When did you start singing?

“I never had lessons or was in a choir, but I started to love singing when I was around 14.”

Q. Why did you want to be a host?

“I was actually encouraged to audition. If it weren’t for my friends’ support, I probably wouldn’t have done so. And I also knew that this is could be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me, so I just thought, ‘Why not?’”

Q. What do you love about Spring Sing?

“I love everything about Spring Sing. I love the process of it, then finally having everyone so excited on club night and seeing that all of it’s worth it.”

Q. What is the hardest part of being a host?

“I’m not the best at learning choreography, so that was kind of stressful for me. I just didn’t want to mess everything or everyone up, especially during show week.”

Q. What are you most looking forward to pertaining to Spring Sing?

“I’m excited for my friends and family to see this year’s club shows and host numbers. This being one of OC’s biggest productions and it being student-led makes it such a rewarding and amazing experience for each student on stage.”

Q. When did you start singing?

“I’ve sung my whole life, but I guess I officially started singing for people in the 4th grade.”

Q. Why did you want to be a host?

“I wanted to be a host because I love performing, and it’s different than what I’m used to. I’m normally used to being a character on stage like in musicals and Cabaret, but when I sing in Spring Sing, it’s kind of like I don’t have to be a character with a hint of Kayti, I get to be just Kayti when I sing as a host. It’s definitely more vulnerable than being a character, but I love the challenge it gives me to be my whole, authentic, vulnerable self on stage.”

Q. What do you love about Spring Sing?

“The thing I love most about Spring Sing is the community it brings together. It’s like people from all majors, clubs and hobbies can all come together for a common goal and put on an amazing show for the school and community.”

Q. What is the hardest part of being a host?

“The hardest part about being a host is putting my whole self on stage. Like I said, I can’t really be anything other than myself when I’m on stage in Spring Sing since I’m not a character like in a musical or Cabaret. It’s 100 percent my own emotions and vulnerability.”

Q. What are you most looking forward to pertaining to Spring Sing?

“I always look forward to Saturday night and seeing how the placements go for the shows and who wins what award. I also love seeing the excitement from everyone, it’s really awesome.”
